Last Updated 4/3/08... I have made a few trips to Catemaco and the area over the past 10 yrs.. I also lived in Catemaco for a few months in summer of 06.. The center piece of interest in the area is the nice little lake surrounded by low mountain peaks and it is tropical forest green everywhere you look!! It is the third largest lake in Mexico and was formed a few thousand yrs ago when a lava flow blocked a river that drain the basin.. It was latter enlarged to its present size when a hydroelectric damn was constructed on the west end.. The burg Catemaco sits more or less on the northwest corner of this 4 mile by 7 mile mineral lake..A few smaller burgs and individual houses are sparsely sprinkled around the rest of the shoreline..
Catemaco is pretty laid back with most vistors coming on weekends and many of the holidays thru out the yr.. The exception being the 3 high periods when the town is extra busy with visitors.. The 15 days of Semana Santa, the 16th of July is a local festival in honor of the Virgen del Carman and the last week of December.. (7 days) Carnaval week festivities 2008 took place took place April 8 thru15 .
Witchcraft
* Magic,Sorcery,Witchcraft & Healing.. http://groups.msn.com/VERACRUZ-COMbyJONW/witchcraft.msnw
* If you don't already know it, Catemaco is a famous witches / spiritual center in Mexico.. Expect to be approched by fortune-tellers, black & white magic witches and or shamans offering their profesional services... (good for what ails ya, or perhaps better yet, for a good story when ya get back home)
* Need a cure but your a few bucks short for the brujo services?? No sweat, visit to one of the local shops that sell the magical associated paraphernalia over the counter and "do it yourself"...
Nanciyaga & Monkey Island
Nanciyaga is a tropical rainforest park / resort.. this is Catemaco's version of Disney World in a tropical rainforest.. Its biggest claim to fame is that the movie Medicine Man was made here a few yrs agao with Sean Connery. More recently Mel Gibson filmed next door at a location known as La Jungla..
Most popular way to get there is by boat, it is an inexpensive and interesting way to go... You'll have no problem finding where to purchase ticket for boat ride.. as anytime you get near the malacon you'll be approached by many men trying to sell you a trip by launcha (boat)
NOTE: be sure that whichever boat you select has life preservers for in event of an emergency.. Occasionally an accident does happen and people have drown.
Once you arrive at Nanciyaga: There is a 30 pesos entry fee which includes a guide to lead you along the trails thru the tropical rainforest, pointing out various faunas, animals, explaininng ancient Indian traditions / religion.. There is also a ceremonial circle, a Temazcal (traditional Indian steam hut) or perhaps try the facial, mineral water mud packs (5-10 pesos) If while your here you feel the need to see a witch, your in luck.. Towards the end of the trek thru the jungle there is a Brujo Hut covienantly located alongside the trail.. Aprox.10 bucks if your interested. (06 prices)
At the exit / entrance area you may buy snacks and refreshments and there is a well stocked tourist shop where you can find a souvenir or two. From here you get back into boat and head for monkey island to see the local monkeys.. Its about a 2 hr trip in all and cost about 5 dollars per person. I recommend it. (park entry fee, food, drink, brujo session, steam baths, mud packs and tourist trinkets are extra) give your guide a tip if you like.. All in all it's a worthwhile trek.
If your driving you may also travel to Nanciyaga by road, being about 7 kilometers or so from Catemaco.. Taxis or the small covered pickup trucks caled Piratas are also readily available.. Local Beach
* Playa Espogoya.. This black sand beach is located right on the eastern end of town, is shaded by many large trees, (no sunburn!!) free parking is available.. is not a long walk if your on foot, or take a taxi from anywhere in town,, shouldn’t exceed 15 pesos.. tables, chairs and limited amount of food stuff available for cheap.. Makes an excellent spot to cool off with a couple of beers on a hot afternoon..
Back in town... check out the attractive little central park, the colorfull church, visit tourist office at the plaza municipal, (couple atm money machines in front also) buy a hot dog or ice cream and join the locals meandering about the park. Nightlife may be a little slow thru the week, but weekends and holidays brings em all out and is quiet lively spot!!
* If your looking for something a little more substantial to eat.. there are many restaurants located along the malcon and or downtown central.. You also find plenty to eat in the mercado which is located just a block west of the zocalo. Another option is to buy some fresh fruit or pig out on some cheap pan dulces from a bakery shop.. or what the hay, the mercado is always interesting place just to stumble about with the locals...
* Come nightfall you’ll likely be hungry again and its possibly you’ll be tired of eating the tourist seafood fare that you’ve found so far at restaurants located along the malacon.. If you stroll around the streets away from the zocalo or malacon, you’ll find many small mom y pop places open in front of their homes,, selling memelas, tacos, tortas, chicken and a variety of other dishes.. you may or may not find the atmosphere all that appetizing in some of them, but the food is for the most part inexpensive, tasty and authentically Mexicana!
* Nightlife.... (go back to Veracruz) If your visiting here thru the week your out of luck, however most weekends things do tend to liven up a bit in Catemaco. If your feet are feeling restless.. just follow your ears to one of the local disco joints along the malacon.... join the teenage boys just outside the club and dance on the street with them.. If find this doesn't do it for you, join the rest of the paying customers inside who are enjoying a brew or two while atttempting to talk over the way too loud music. The racket doesn’t start until aound 10 and shuts down whenever the cows go home to wake the roosters up..(3-5 AM) .
