Language.. Some, but not many people speak English in Veracruz, most everyone speaks Spanish so plan accordingly.. If your Spanish is weak, or non-existent is probably best to practice up a bit before traveling.. bring along a Spanish English dictionary and a small phrase book when you travel. When speaking fails, remember even simple sign language / hand signals / mime will get you thru a lot of situations.. Another tip is if your having trouble with pronunciation, write down the name and or address of where it is you want to go, or see to present to taxi drivers, bus station, whoever.... Many businesses in tourist areas are accustomed to dealing with foreigners, are friendly and helpful and will do whatever it takes to help you..
