The name "Los Tuxtlas" derives from the náhuatl (Aztec language) word "toxtli" (rabbit). The region, located in the southeast of the state of Veracruz, is a succession of mountains of volcanic origin, and represents the northern most tropical rain forest on our planet..  ("DEMATAC")

Principal towns and areas of interest in Los Tuxtlas region include Tres Zapotes, Santiago Tuxtla, San Andres Tuxtla, Catemaco, waterfall Eyipantla, the rainforest park of Nanciyaga, laguna Sontecomapan, San Martin biosphere and several nice beaches along the gulf coast. The red lines indicate the principle roads in the area.
