Villa Rica. the Ruins Quiahuiztlan and Matates..

(about 1 1/2 hrs north of Veracruz)

2001-2005 ...  We have made this trip a few times.. the beach is great, one of Mari and my favorites.. The archeological site Quiahuiztlan sits about 400 foot up on one side of the mountain.. It is a unique site.. none other like it in Mexico.. The mountain is named Cerro de los Matates and the birdseye view of the coast itself is enough reason to make the trip.. Visiting the ruins first and then spending few hrs at the beach makes for an excellent daytrip..

You can travel travel here from Veracruz fairly easy by one of the bus companies that run continously by it.. In Veracruz, tell the bus driver you want to get off at Villa Rica and or the ruins Quiahuiztlan.. (its just past small town of Farallon) The bus will stop at a 4-way intersection in middle of countryside where you get off..

If your on foot, Villa Rica is about a 20 minute walk towards the coast.. There is a simple sign on opposite side of road "Quiahuiztlan".. Follow the winding dirt road that leads up the 400 foot, or so to the ruins site.. ( it's a bit of a long haul, especially on a hot day if your on foot ) If this is the case and you don't want to make the hike.. wait for a taxi to come along and hire it, or you can also get off bus at before you get to Villa Rica at the small town of Farallon .. take taxi from there to the ruins site..

No need for a taxi after visiting the ruins as its all downhill to the main road and fairly easy walking.. Cross the highway and continue on by foot for perhaps another 20 minutes to the small fishing village of Villa Rica.. Chill out here with a cold beer, or other refreshments.. perhaps order something light to eat.. Its a a very pleasant beach, palm trees, sand dunes, etc.. one of my favorite beaches..

Hotel and restaurant services are pretty limited in Villa Rica.. There are a few mom and pop jonts.. but you can chase up a fish dinner, picadas or empanadas, etc.. There is one hotel at the southern end of town and a few other options.. Also room enough for tents and campers on beach, but better check with one of the locals before you set up for the night..
