Magic, Sorcery, Witchcraft and Healing

Omens: They announce good or bad luck. If a merchant runs into a rabbit on his way to the market, that means he will sell all his merchandise.
To run into a snake announces legal problems or imprisonment.
When a person is looking for an herb on the hill to cure somebody and finds a snake or a bird blocking the way, it means that the sick person will die.
The sound that the woodpecker makes, announces difficulties for that who listens to it.
When someone goes on a road and listens the song of a tecolote (Owl), it means that there will be death.
To see or to hear a sparrow hawk announces wealth... a royal eagle announces danger.

Spells: The spell consists of an agreement of collaboration
with the Devil to cause something bad to someone else, using the arts of sorcery or black magic. The magic will allow an object to represent the chosen individual for the charm, and the damage will generally be more efficient if the work is made by a true sorcerer or "witch".

Evil Eye: It is also called "herida de ojo" or "ojo de envidia" (eye wound or eye of envy). It consists of the capacity to make something bad to someone else, only by projecting hostility on him. It is said that the look of some people is able to damage, especially children, since they are weaker. This theory, even if it seems pagan, was supported by Saint Thomas.

Fright Disease: Souls in pain, those that are in the transition between the purgatory and their final destination (heaven or hell) punish their relatives if they don't pray for their soul. Although the Catholic Church condemns the practice of sorcerers, witch doctors and wizards, the priests are usually the only ones that can cure the "fright disease.
Because of fright or fear, sick people feel weakness, depression, apathy, drowsiness and nervousness. Several indigenous groups such as the Nahuas of Zongolica, Veracruz, say that people who are sick of fear, sleep a lot during the day, they don't eat and they speak without noticing because they dream of what frightens them. At night, they sleep a little, they are startled and always restless.

Amulets: There is good news!! The damage can be prevented! There are magic objects for that called amulets, or talismans that are carried on the body for good luck or to banish bad influences. The red color, old silver coins and coral beads are necessary elements for their making. In order to make them powerful enough, a specialist must "pray" for them.

In order to divert harmful looks, wearing a necklace or a red ribbon is recommended.

The azabache (jet) and the ojo de venado (deer eye) are also protections from the evil eye and the evil air, since these absorb the damage and they get marred or explode, avoiding that the
person who carries them gets injured.
.
Coral is the most powerful amulet against people with a heavy look.

Amber protects against evil air and envy.

The colorin seeds, pipilchichis, tlacopatle and tobacco
are effective against bad spirits.

Herbs like rue, rosemary and basil are useful against the powers of the goblins and the sorcerers.

The male garlic cut on first Friday of March, are tied with red ribbons in the shape of a crown to frighten off bad spirits and sorcerers. They also bring good luck.

In almost all the markets of Mexico there is a section dedicated to these products. In these stalls there are all kinds of magic products, even rarities like toloache, opossum tails, serpent’s skin and rattlesnakes, badger legs, colorines (red beans) and powders like those of the witches: gallina negra (black hen), jorobado humillador (humilliating hunchback) or siete machos (seven males) and others. The effectiveness of these depends on the accuracy with which the user says the respective prayer and follows the printed instructions on the back of the envelope.
