Will the food taste like "Soul Food" without meat?
 
OK, so you want that "soul food" taste, the one you grew up with and can't help but desire....I'm hearin ya...
 
You can actually have a great vegetarian meal "almost" like mama's cookin'- without meat. The trick is to be real clear about what actually creates the favors you desire.
 
If you really thought about it. All those meals you had were cooked, were with your basic soulfood spices and ingredients (many of which you probably still got in yo' cabinet). These spices are the key to getting that soulfood taste. The meat itself is actually pretty tasteless without all that "stuff" on it.
 
So go through your cabinets, or your parent's and survey the ware...and, you got yo' start to a great meal.
 
 TIPS:
  • Instead of adding the fat and lard look to alternatives like olive oil and other nonsaturated fats.
  • You can "fry" your veggies and tofu just like you do fried chicken and salmon patties.
  • Read the spices in your ol' favorites and use them to fresh to spice up your dishes. For example most prepackaged "soul' spices are made of garlic, onion, peppers, and lemon. So go ahead an load it on your dishes. USE FRESH...
  • Use lemon juice instead of salt to get the "salty" taste.
