The Lowdown on Juicing
Why juice? It tastes great! It is also an easy way to get fresh nutrients, minerals and vitamins, naturally. Juice is easier to digest - yes we need the fiber too, but if you have trouble getting your fruit and vegetable servings in - juicing is great. The vitamins from food and drink are usually easier to absorb for the body than from supplements.
Yall' remember this-you get out of it what you put into it. So, always select the freshest, organically grown fruits and vegetables, especially if you include the peels in the juice you are making (which I recommend).
I find that tThe best is not always the priciest. My nephew, who manages a healthfood co-op says, when looking for a juicer, these are the things you should consider: the juice taste and quality, lower RPM's give better tasting, and healthier juice. The motor size (the more power - the longer it will last.) How easy it is to use and to clean. Which types of fruits and vegetables it is best suited for, and if it has a good warranty matters too. Tip: Do your research and then got to ebay or look on your local stores bulletin board for bargins. Clean it your juicer carefully. Bacteria loves to grow in murky wet corners. Make sure you clean and dry your juicer thoroughly after use.
Drink it immediately. Not only does it taste better and fresher. Nutrient levels are higher. Juices are highly perishable and excellent breeding ground for bacteria - so drink your juice that same day.
Don't juice the greens from carrots and rhubarb - they are toxic. So are apple seeds and the orange part from oranges and grapefruit.
Use your juice for cooking. Vegetable juices are great in soups and stews as liquid instead of water or stock. Or freeze fruit juice in cubes and include when making smoothies, it adds thickness without the calories of sherbet, yogurt or ice-cream.
Experiment! Don't be afraid to try unorthodox combinations of fruits and vegetables. The combinations are endless, and usually the result is great.
The 8 oz (240 ml) rule. For best nutritional results, drink only 8 oz of juice at a time. That is all the body can assimilate at one time. So drink several smaller juices spread throughout the day.
