Why I Became a Vegetarian...
A Member's Story
I first experimented with my diet when I was a teenager. I wanted to be as healthy as possible and reducing animal consumption seemed to be the answer. As a Texan I didn’t know why vegetarianism seemed attractive to me since it wasn’t considered healthy, but it was. In college I was over weight. I have been eating the wrong things. Fearing the effects of my actions I started looking at how I can change my ways to ensure a healthy future. A number of my family members were overweight and suffer from high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and other such problems. A lot of it was related to diet and exercise. I then became a vegetarian, gave up sodas and such stuff. I lost weight and was never constipated (you think that is a stupid thing to say, but you don’t miss doing it till it’s gone- digging the high fiber).
Also more than 1 doctor been telling me since a teenager that I have an allergy to eggs and dairy. I even been hospitalized after a reaction I had to an egg based malaria shot. I do not want to be faced with that again when I become pregnant.
I fell off the wagon after 3 years ago, but my husband wanted to become a vegetarian for his first time. By that time I wanted to become one for life. We decided we wanted to raise our kids veggie and do whatever is in our power to keep us healthy. The meat industry is the most powerful in keeping us vegetarians. Their treatment of animals, feeding flesh to them, giving them antibiotics and other chemical treatments are so wrong I cannot continue to eat in ignorant bliss. Like slavery, you cannot continue the practice without the consequences.
I’m on my way to become vegan. I’m not perfect. It’s a process but I do not regret my decision. I do it for weight management (the only way I can stay thin), disease prevention and the environment in my small way.--supernovadiva5000
