Read a pattern all the way through before you choose and make purchases for your project. Make sure you understand the stitches, techniques, etc. When working with textured or novelty yarns (boucle, eyelash, or other yarns where you may have trouble seeing your chains), string open or split stitch markers on the yarn before you start to crochet, then slide one down to catch in each chain. Alternate colors to make counting easier. Be mindful that any alterations you make to a pattern, such as hook size or yarn may (sometimes dramatically) alter the gauge, size, etc. When shopping for yarn, buy at least one more skein/ball than the pattern suggests. You can use what's left over for another smaller project. Always check the yarn labels for dye lot numbers. Not all yarns use them, but in some cases the color may be noticably different between batches. Most yarn companies have websites with free patterns, newsletters, mailing lists. Use a plastic toothbrush holder to carry/store your hooks. Also, a pencil or makeup case w/zipper or video case is handy for small items, like tapestry needle, tape measure, stitch markers, folding scissors, tape flags, paper clips, etc. Preserve your original pattern by making a 'working copy' that you can use to make notes on. Store your patterns in sheet protectors; file in binders, organized by type of pattern. Take pictures and create your own 'portfolio'. Ch 2 instead of ch 3 at the beginning of a dc round/row to help eliminate the gap between stitches. Use a different color hook from your yarn/thread to make it easier to see your work. Place an opposite-colored towel or sheet from the color you're working with in your lap; the contrast helps make it easier on your vision.
