Holiday Homes & Homelessness

Burnt down holiday cottage
Meibion Glyndwr was linked to more than 200 fire bombings of property
Welsh Republican Comment has received a number of hate mails mainly over the issue of holiday homes and cottages. So next time you decide to buy a second home, Mr English man, please remember that not only are you participating in colonial aggression and the destruction of the Nation of Cymru, but you are also assisting homelessness: Did you know or do you care that:

Many people in Wales do not have a home, or one which is so poor or insecure that it can hardly be called a home. For example:

  • many people live on the streets and at least 1,795 dependent children live in temporary accommodation;
  • it is estimated that there are over 98,000 occupied unfit homes in Wales and over 50,000 children live in unfit housing in Wales;
  • thousands of people live in poor short term lets in the private rented sector;
  • increasing numbers of people face eviction because of rent arrears;
  • over 220,000 households in Wales depend on Housing benefit to pay their rents.
  • Illness and accidents caused by poor housing cost the NHS in Wales an estimated £50 million per year.

Figures released in Jan 05 by the Halifax reveals that there are now fewer people buying homes than there were 20 years ago.

Added to this growing crisis, we see more and more  houses in Welsh communities being sold off to wealthy in-commers, thereby pricing locals out of the property market.
