The Birth of WNSFM and Why!

I STARTED THIS GROUP because, for many years I've believed it incongruous that men should be expected to wear trousers, shirt and, in order to be 'fully dressed', a tie, in the Australian summer. That sort of attire is more suited to cold weather, and colder climates. To put it bluntly I'm sick and tired of being thought queer or kept in a straight jacket simply because other men won't get out of theirs.

In most situations skirts are as suitable as trousers and they are far more practical in the warmer parts of Australia, but there are several factors which limit the opportunity. Apart from the expectation of wearing trousers (or formal shorts) there are few suitable designs readily available, and men are ultra-ultra-conservative when it comes to trying ANYTHING different; yet we now see young guys walking around in shorts which are so baggy they look like skirts. One of my many female friends said she reckons most men would agree that skirts can be very comfortable - if only they would let themselves do so.

I had hoped that I'd find another group which I could join to encourage the closet skirt wearing males out of their closets, but the nearest I could find was for cross-dressers.

This group is not intended to encourage cross-dressing, but to encourage men to wear skirts in place of shorts and trousers - as normal attire. In the years I've been doing that publicly I've had very few negative reactions (there'll always be some) but a lot of positive ones.

One ex fashion designer I spoke to a few months back described my efforts as promoting a new fashion trend. How true.

So what would I like to happen in this group?
First, I'd like the guys in it to share their own experiences. Let's hear about what's happened when you've worn a skirt, or where you've been.

Second, since this group is all about encouragement, let's all encourage the guys who need it to overcome their fears or conerns. I ask the girls in particular to help as much as possible - you've already got the freedom to choose.

Third, we can all probably offer suggestions about possible skirt designs (even come up with some), and some of us may be able and willing to offer sewing skills to make a few.

Fourth, I'm open to suggestions about other ways to help. Meeting other members would definitely be a good idea too, if it's practicable.

Let's be positive. Together we can change the perception that skirts belong in the "women's clothing" basket just as women in the mid 1900s changed the perception that trousers were only for men. Roll on the day men can go to formal business meetings wearing skirts!
