Another of the giants among Cryptozoological creatures is the famous Loch
Ness monster. There have been beliefs that…something...has resided in
Loch Ness for at least the last 1,500 yrs. The ancient Picts, Celtic peoples
that inhabited the Highlands of Scotland, obviously believed this. Among the
many statues of animals that are carved out of stone in the region, one is
unique. The other statues are easily identifiable as animals one expects to
see from that area, “The exception is a strange beast with an elongated beak
or muzzle, a head locket or spout, and flippers instead of feet…” according to
the website for the TV show Nova.
The modern tale of Nessie doesn’t start until the 1930’s when reports started
coming in with some regularity of occurrences out on the Loch (lake in
Scotland for the uninitiated). These reports usually had slight differences, but
were consistent in the description of a large animal with a long neck. Some of
the variables were skin color and texture, the description of the appendages
being either legs or flippers and the size and shape of the body. This hasn’t
stopped the supporters of Nessie however.
As for evidence; to this day there has never been a clear, concise picture of
the animal. Many people have attempted to capture the beast on film; their
efforts have been mediocre at best. The one picture that has the most
circulation is the (in)famous image known as the Surgeons photo, showing part
of the body and the long neck of something on the Loch. Unfortunately, this
photo is probably a forgery and is unreliable. If interested in more, please
