FLEMING LINE

The relative position in our family tree is shown in the following diagram:
Wootton // Wootton=Melvin // Melvin=Gilmour // Gilmour=Fleming
The FLEMING line joined the family tree when James GILMOUR married Margaret FLEMING on 19 June 1914.

Our most famous relation must be Sir Alexander FLEMING. There is a museum in his honour in London and details can be found towards the bottom of this page. Chris's Great-grandfather was also an Alexander Fleming and the two were cousins (ie Sir Alexander's father, Hugh Fleming, was the son of another Hugh Fleming who married Mary Craig. They also had a son Alexander who married Grace Anderson and they, in turn, had yet another son named Alexander Fleming (1849 - 1922). This Alexander married Margaret Craig on 6 Feb 1884 and had a daughter, Margaret Fleming (1886-1978) who was Chris's Grandmother).

In 1899, Alexander and Grace Fleming celebrated their Diamond (60th) Wedding Aniversery with the following invitation:

Many photographs appear to have been taken on the day and we have a large, framed one on our wall at home with 61 members of the family along with a note of their names.  Unfortunately, this has proved too large to scan onto the site  but a list of those featured appears at the foot of this page.

However, the two photographs below were obtained at the same time from Anne Melvin, and we are trying to establish the details of them.

The photograph below was probably taken before 1886 (because Margaret Fleming, born that year, does not appear).  Some of the 64 people featured are known - 11 have been identified to date including the two Fleming brothers (Alexander and Robert) who married the two CRAIG sisters (Margaret and Janet).

The photograph below is a family group of James CRAIG, his wife Margaret STRANG taken at Floors Farm Eaglesham in June 1889.  A full list of the 20 people in the photograph is held by Alan Wootton and they include Alexander Fleming (second person from left at back) and his brother Robert (third from right at back).  Both were born at Thriepland Farm but it was inherited by their elder brother, Andrew.

Alexander Fleming "of Thriepland" is shown below:

The photograph below shows 4 female generations of "Margaret"s with Margaret Reid (then Gilmour) as a baby in the arms of her Great-grandmother Margaret Strang (later Craig).  Her Mother, Margaret Fleming (later Gilmour) is on the left-hand side and her Grandmother, Margaret Craig (later Fleming) on the right-hand side.
