In my possession is a copy of the enormous Seligmann family-tree drawn-up by Reinhold Seligmann (click for more info). In one corner of this there is a small and not very detailed tree entitled "Angaben uber die Familie Springer". This contains the descendants of an un-named couple, Mr and Mrs Springer of Bamberg. Among their children was Hale Springer who married Isak Rafael seligmann. I am one of their descendants. I have managed to find out much more about this family and the latest version of the tree can be viewed by clicking: here . Mr and Mrs Springer are in fact Meyer Springer and Babette Bertha (born Schwed). Meyer had a second wife Ernestine Dettelbacher (?born Seligmann....is this another or our Seligmann?); they had at least two children: Seligman Springer [1834, lived only 2 months] and Isaak Springer[born 1836]
LEOPOLD SPRINGER: His descendants
On Reinhold's tree we find that amongst Hale's siblings there is the viennese banker Leopold Springer (dates unknown). According to Reinhold he had at least one child, Adolf, also a banker. One of Adolf's children is Baron Sigmund Springer ("Bankier . Wien. Verh. mit Einer Tochter Rothschild"). This aroused my interest and although there is much more to be learnt, here is a digest of my research on this distant branch of the family.
-
Our Baron Sigmund Springer is also referred to as "Sigismund". He lived 1875 to 1928 and became a British Subject in 1905, having founded in London the Anglo-Austrian Bank.
-
Sigismund Springer was the son of Adolf springer and Baroness Ernestine Goldberger von Buda[born1851].
-
In 1911 he married Valentine Noemi de Rothschild (born 1886, Vienna, died 1969, Austria), daughter of Salomon Albert Anselm von Rothschild[1844-1911] and Bettina Caroline de Rothschild[1858-1892].
-
They had 2 children named after her parents: Albert who settled in Israel in 1950 and Bettina who married Kurt von Reininghaus, a diplomat.
DANIEL and The FOULD-SPRINGER family
One of Hale's other siblings was Daniel Hirsch Springer[born 1816] who is labelled "Professor. Paris". He seems to have had 2 daughters and a son named Maurice Springer labelled as "Arzt. Paris" - a medical man. Then in the next generation there is a Jean Millaud. I am in the process of trying to find out more about this branch.
I received an interesting e-mail from Andre Convers which contains the following info:
-
He has a cousin who is gr-gr-daughter of a Daniel Springer who ran a school Institut Springer whose alumni include Henri Bergson.
-
This Daniel was born c.1815 (Austria or Hungary) and died in Paris 1893. He married Betty Reiss. they had a daughter Berta Springer born 1848 in Epernay where Daniel was a teacher at the time.
-
Berta first married Samuel Aron Blum, architect[1829-1873]. They had one daughter Julie Frederique blum born 1871, Paris. She later married Oscar Dalmbert[1846, Wissembourg-1926,Paris]. They had two sons Henri[died .c.1960,Paris] and Paul Julien[1882, Le havre-1947,Paris].
Daniel Springer did indeed teach Henri Bergson. I am now in contact with one of his descendants in Paris. He has sent me a number of papers relating to Henri Bergson and to Daniel Springer. Included in these are a few lwetters written from Bergson to Daniel's son Maurice Springer. (April 2003)
A few days after sending me the information summarised above, Andre wrote again. According to Denis Mellot (born Dalmbert), Bertha Springer had a daughter from her first marriage (see 3 above) called Jeanne. Jeanne married Albert MILLAU who owned a chemical fertilizer factory in Marseilles. they had one son, Jacques who was 18 in 1918 when he died "heroically just at the end of the war". Is this Jeanne Millau the same as the "Jean Millaud" on Reinholt Seligmann's tree? YES (Sep 2004)
In the second letter from Andre he suggested that the french company Springer, a yeast and related products manufacturer, was "I think founded by a member of the family". Intrigued, I contacted Springer(France) and received a reply rapidly. Here is what I learnt fom him and from other correspondents:
-
The Company {most probably a branch of Wiener Rheindorfer Spiritus und Presshefe Fabrik, founded1862 by the Barons Springer} was founded by Baron Max de Springer (1807-1885) who came from Vienna. He had 5 children amongst whom were Gustave[1842, vienna-1920], Alfred[1843-1904] and Herrmann[1845-1895].
-
Gustave who married Helene Koenigswarter(1846-1886) had a daughter Marie-Cecile who married Eugene Fould. (I have subsequently learnt that he was a descendant of Achille Fould whowas finance minister to NapoleonIII).
-
Marie-cecile and Eugene had 4 children:Baron Max-Robert Fould-Springer[1906-1999] {attended Magdalene Coll. Oxford 1924-26}, Therese Fould-Springer, 1908-1997, (m. Alan Pryce-Jones), Liliane Fould-Springer born 1916 (m. Elie de Rothschild) and Helene (m. Eduard Propper de Callejon, 1895-1972, diplomat)
-
The Springers of Fould-Springer lived in Ansbach at the beginning of the 19th century.
Is the Springer of Fould-Springer related to the Springers descended from Meyer and Babette Springer above??????? Probably not (28.march.2002) Not at all, as far as i can see! (Sep 2004)
