United in the Fight for the Children's Education

My name is Shanon and I am the proud mother of Anthony, an 18 yr old diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome at the age of 13.

As parents, we struggle to help our children come to terms with this debilitating, frustrating disease.  As we are in the midst of the struggle, we also have to battle doctors, insurance companies, and sometimes uninformed educators.  To say that it gets overwhelming would be putting it mildly.

We need to come up with ideas that allow these children to achieve success with their education.  If we can collaborate, hopefully, we will be able to use each other's strengths and develop ways to accomodate for the deficits.

Educators, some of you have learned the practical applications to educate children who have disabilities.  We, as parents can inform you about our observations.  (since many of our children are either partially or totally homebound)

It is my hope that this site provides a wealth of information, dialogue, support, compassion, understanding and cooperation for all who enter.

This site's mission is to open dialogue between parents of YPWC's (young people with CFS/CFIDS/ME) and the people who have the heart to teach them. (homebound teachers included)  If we work together, the desired result would be giving the children some degree of victory over CFIDS.

I hope to increase awareness about this disease and do my part to eliminate the arrogance and ignorance that hinders the children from getting the services they need. My prayer is for others to come along beside me to develop ideas.  Then, we can share the things that work and modify the things that don't.

Our energy needs to be spent trying to educate and provide relief for these children...not battling with each other.

The only thing that has made it a little easier for me is experience in working with children with Learning Disabilities, Autism, ADHD, Mental Retardation, Deafness, Traumatic Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy and Emotional Disabilities.  I never thought I would have to utilize some of those strategies to help my own child.  Yet, they have been the key to Anthony's success.

I have enjoyed giving workshops in other states that focus on CFS and the impact on a child's education.  I enjoy helping parents and teachers build bridges for these children to cross over into success in the academic arena.

Anthony graduates this year, but that doesn't end the use of this web site.  Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can be of any help.
