ROOF RACKS

YAKIMA Q TOWERS BASE ROOF RACK

SPECS:

  • Quick-cam makes installation a snap.
Micro-adjustment post allows you to fine-tune the tension of the rack to your car.
Ball and socket mechanism allows the rack to self-adjust to any roof/door geometry.
For quick and easy car rack installation, Yakima provides 4 measurements for tower placement tailored to your car's make and model.

REVIEWS:

  1. Before I got the Yakima Q Tower car rack for my 1998 Honda Accord, I folded down my seats and put the skis in the trunk. The problem is that then there is only room for one person in the back seat, the skis take up space in the trunk, and it's difficult to fit multiple skis or snowboards in the car. I decided to go the roof rack route. I bought a set of the Q Towers, crossbars and q clips for my car, a set of locks, and a Yakima ski rack attachment (Yakima Lift ticket 6). It took around a half hour to make all the measurements and put everything together, but it was fairly easy to assemble. I spent most of the time making sure my measurements were accurate so that the rack would fit properly and securely. Once everything was set up, it worked fantastic. The rack is easy to remove and put back on, and they don't budge when I push and pull the bars with my hand. I've used it for many ski trips and haven't had any problems with rack. One of my friends has a cheap magnetic ski holder that attaches to the top of her car, but it wasn't as strong or secure as the Yakima rack system. In fact, one of the straps holding down my skis broke on the way up; luckily the other strap held and my skis didn't fall off. I don't have to worry about something like that happening with this rack. My only complaint is that at high speeds, it adds quite a bit of air resistance. At around 80 mph, it is very noisy and reduces my gas mileage by around 3-5 mpg or so. They are easy to remove and put back on, however, so I can take them off when I am going on long trips and don't need the rack.

  1. I have a 20o1 Saab 9-3 and was tired of always putting the bikes in the trunk and back seat. i talked to some friends about what bike racks they thought were good and they said Thule bike racks were the way to go. I checked out the site and learned that since I didn't have a factory rack I needed a base rack system and the Thule 400XT Aero was the roof rack system that fit my car. I didn't have any problem putting it on and I made sure that I got the locks too. The load bars were a sufficient length for me to attach 4 bike carriers. I went with the Thule Velo Vise model. It was definitely an investment but the warranty is excellent and I plan to be able to transfer the roof rack to other cars in the future.

REVIEWS:

  1. I bought the Thule 589 Velo Vise fork mounted rooftop rack tray because I've always used Thule bike racks and they last forever. My other Thule bike rack lasted on my VW Jetta, Toyota Corolla and even moved it to the Jeep. The Velo Vise tray installs quickly onto your Thule Load Bars (purchased separately) via a channel mounted, tray attached screw assembly for the rear bar, which attaches to a bottom plate via two wing knobs, which are easily removed. However, 589 is secured and locked into place on the front bar, where the fork block is bolted into place with 2 M6 x45 Allen Bolts to another bottom plate. Once mounted, you can literally shake the car with it because it’s not going anyplace unless you have the corresponding Allen wrench to dissemble it. Incidentally, this is the only way it can be stolen. Installing your bike is a snap, provided you have no problem lifting it above the roof of your car that is. After removing your front wheel you simply place the rear (attached) wheel into the tray, inset your fork dropouts on the skewer located on both sides of the nylon reinforced fork block, secure the block. Your front wheel is locked in. Now take the nylon reinforced ratcheting wheel strap through your rear wheel and secure it through the ratchet, on the opposite side of the tray and lock it down. Your rear wheel is secure. Your bike is now held solidly upright! There is an optional lock assembly available from Thule. In my opinions the Velo Vise bike racks are a great deal.

REVIEWS:

  1. I am a fairly short person and trying to get my family's skis and snowbaords onto the ski rack of our Chevy Tahoe has always been dreadful. I started looking around and discovered the Thule Pull Top Ski Rack. It is perfect for me. I love how it telescopes out from the rack so i don't have to stand on edge of the back seat trying to secure the skis into the rack. Now I can stand on the ground and easily reach up and put the skis in the rack then slide the ski rack back into place with a quick snap. The Pull Top may not be for everyone but it works very well for ahem vertically challenged people.

YAKIMA HULL RAISER KAYAK RACKS

SPECS:

  • Accepts virtually all hull shapes; cradles and protects your kayak with soft pads.
Because kayak is propped up on its side, it leaves more space on your crossbars for other gear.
Includes heavy-duty straps with padded buckles for secure transport.
Compatible with most factory racks--just add MightyMounts, sold separately.

REVIEWS:

  1. The Yakima HullRaiser was just what my wife and I were looking for. We have a Ford Explorer that has a factory rack. Many of the kayak racks we looked at required some kind of factory rack conversion kit in order to attach kayak carriers. Our friend told us about the Hull Raiser because you can use an adaptor known as Mighty Mounts that work in combination with the HullRaiser. We checked it out and the system seemed simple enough. We got two Hull Raisers and attached them to the Mighty Mounts. Definitely a simple system to install. The HullRaiser is superb because it carries the kayak somewhat vertically and allows us to attach two Hull Raiser Kayak Racks on our factory rack with out running out of cross bar space.

Special thanks to our friends at ORS Racks Direct: Suppliers of Yakima Car Racks and Thule Car Racks including trunk, hitch and roof racks. They have provided us with much of the initial specifications on the most popular products available.
