Autauga Roll Of Honor

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Due to the lack of resources to develop and issue medals of valor, the Confederate government was never able to supply an equivalent to the US Medal of Honor. Thus the CS Congress passed an act on October 13, 1862 providing that a "Roll of Honor" be published afer each battle in lieu of medals.
The idea was to stimulate the morale and performance of the Confederate soldier. Any officer, non-commissioned officer, or private who was "conspicuous for courage and good conduct on the field of battle" would have his name inscribed on the roll.
The act also specified that the list of names be read at dress parades, published in at least one newspaper in each state, and filed in the offices of the adjutant and inspector generals.
The members of each company voted for the men in their company to be on the "Roll of Honor" after each engagement. The men so honored had their names read at assemblies of the Regiment. The names on the "Roll of Honor" were also published in the Journal of the Confederate Congress.
The "Autauga Roll Of Honor" listed here does not reflect any official "Roll Of Honor" as described above. It is merely a list of those Autaugians who died in service of the Confederacy, on or off the battlefield. This Roll is my "Tribute Of Honor" to our Autauga ancestors who made the supreme sacrifice.
(NOTE: Some men included on this list may have resided in neighboring counties to Old Autauga.)
