Farid al Atrash's music is not easy to dance to. It is dense and complex musically, in some cases over-orchestrated . There are genuinely beautiful sections and certain songs which are standard repetoire for belly dance. Some are not appropriate for dance. I find them challengeing and good for the development of musicianship. One of my long term practice habits is to dance to music I don't particularly like that is challengeing. This will give you real musicianship and a good understanding of the particular maqam.
Contemporary musicians are now breaking these musical conventions and compositional rules. example EUCD 1363 the songs are broken off and do not have the requisite phrases which signal the end of the song. That happens from cutting the songs down to size and trying to tweak the arrangements so they can get them into some arbitrary time frame.

Alaa Ashmawy
note on pronunciation
The 2 A's in this name have a long aa sound. Such a sound is not found in the English language. In Arabic it is extended a bit like the baa baa black sheep children's song. Academics indicate it with a diacritic . That's a line horizontally drawn over the top of one a or just written as 2 A's as you see it in Alaa's name. Some keyboards don't have a key for that diacritic.
