Here's how I've made the sleeping bags, which I call "Doggy Bags".

You'll need:

standard size pillow case, either new or used

1 yard fleece or fake fur (OR Wal-mart carries a fake fleece mat that costs 12.97 that is the perfect size for this.)

1 yard batting (optional)

scissors, thread, measuring tape, sewing machine

ALL SEAMS ARE 1 INCH ALLOWANCE

Measure 20 inches from the open end of the pillow case. Cut off extra. (You can save this extra material to make small pillows for the dogs.) Measure a piece of fleece or fake fur and cut to 20 inches by 39 inches.

Turn the pillow case inside-out. Sew the cut end closed, using 1 inch seam allowance. Turn right sides out.

Fold the fleece in half lenghtwise, fleece sides together, (so the 39 inches goes to 19 1/2 inches in length.) Sew seams on the ends directly across from the fold and down one side of the fleece. Turn right sides out. You should now have a fleece "pillow case" the same size as the actual pillow case.

At this point, you can cut a piece of batting 37 x 18 inches. If you'd like to make a more padded (and warmer) bag, wrap the batting around the fleece so that it just fits. Tack batting along sides and ends of bag.

Place the fleece bag inside the pillow case, with open ends of fleece bag and pillow case matching. Also match up seam of fleece bag with a side seam of the pillow case. You should now have a bag within a bag, the right side of the pillow case on the outside, with the fleece lining facing the inside. (The batting, if you used it, is sandwiched inbetween.) Sew the edges of the pillow case and the fleece together around the edge of the bag. Be careful not to sew the bag shut!

You should now have a finished doggy bag. It's washable - just throw it in the washer. (Learned from experience - don't throw in with the towels or socks - it gets lint on them.)

I've made many of these and have used the following variations:

Larger doggy bag for larger dog: Use two pillow cases. Open side seam of each. With right sides together, sew the two pillow cases together at the seams to make a wide pillow case. Don't cut the end off the pillow case. Use it's normal length.

Doggy bag with pillow: Buy a small craft pillow. These are available at Wal-mart in the craft section. They are fiber-filled and have a white cover. The cost was about $5.00. Before sewing the pillow case end to the fleece, insert the pillow, then sew the ends shut. NOTE: This does give less inside room for the dog. Small dogs do fine, but for larger dogs that just fit inside the regular size bag, you'll have to first make a larger bag using the variation above.

OR instead of a pillow inside the bag, you can stuff it with a bit of fiber-fill.
