Pet Hair Eliminator

By Solutia.
The dogs have never really enjoyed being brushed - until I found this brush a while back.  The bristles are soft and it "massages" their skin as it pulls out the dead hair.  As you can see from the picture, Peso is enjoying grooming for the first time!

The brush also works to remove hair off of upholstry, carpet, etc.  Just "brush" the surface and the hair is pulled off.

I paid $11.99 for this at Petsmart.

Igloo Bed

By .
This is one of the dog's favorite beds, especially the little ones.  It's found in the cat section at Petsmart.  It keeps some of their body heat in, creates a den like atmosphere and is a great hiding place for treats and toys.  It comes in various fabric designs.  It can hold two four pound Chis, if they'll share!

Another popular bed is the 3-way bed. It's also found in the cat section.  It's called 3 way because you can use it as pictured, fold on side down and use it like a "couch" bed or push the top down and it forms a snuggle bed.  I currently have one of these in each of the dog's wire kennels for sleeping.  We have the ceiling fan on in the bedroom every night and the Chis don't appreciate the breeze.  This bed gives them the ability to snuggle in comfort.  Below is a picture of Paco being a model for me.  I also put their "doggy bags" inside the beds.  Paco like to crawl into his doggy bag inside the 3-way bed.
A word of caution:  DO NOT wash the 3-way bed in the washing machine!!  It needs to be washed by hand.

Memory Foam Bed

By .

This is the least expensive, nicest, memory foam bed I've found; $16 to $31. It has a machine washable faux suede cover that is very soft to the touch. It's perfect for the bottom of the cages, on the floor or in the car. The only down side is the fabric is not waterproof but I saw a tip on this site's "Tips and Hints" page advising how to protect the foam.

Here's the catalog info:

This high density therapeutic memory foam bed will quickly and automatically conform to your dog's unique shape and weight when he lies down, cradling him for a snug, supportive rest. It alleviates pressure points that cause joint stiffness and unsatisfactory sleep, the memory foam will always return to its original shape. Perfect for older, arthritic or injured dogs! The soft cover is double stitched, zippered and machine washable. Color: Sand

Available in 4 sizes:

X-Small: 17 3/4 " x 11 3/4 "

    Dental Clens Pads

    By Drs. Foster and Smith.
I find this product much easier to use than a doggy toothbrush.  Just wipe the teeth and you're done.  The dogs seem to take better to these than the toothbrush, also, but that's not to say they enjoy it!

    "Donut" or Nest Bed

By Many manufacturers make this item..
Peso loves her donut bed and Paco and Nani like to take turns napping in it, too.  A "donut" bed is one that has a padded ring around the outside and then a small pillow or a lining of fake sheep's wool inside.  Peso likes to lie with her head on the padded ring like a pillow.

Paco doesn't like sleeping in this bed at night because he gets too cold and prefers to cuddle in his sleeping bag, but Peso usually doesn't like to snuggle under blankets and prefers this bed at night.  The other dogs do like to sleep together in it during the day, however.

    Bark-Free Ultrasonic Trainer

    By Lentek.
I've been looking for a solution to the barking problem in our household for a long time.  I've tried the no-bark collars and they do work, but with six dogs this was not a cost efficient solution.  The dog who was wearing the collar would get corrected if another dog barked.

I received a Sharper Image catalog in the mail.  As I was leafing through it, I came upon this device.  I decided to try it.  I'm pleased to say that it works very well.  The dogs still bark when someone comes to the door, but not for long.

The things I especially like about this product are:

    •  It runs on electricity and not on batteries.  It comes with a long extension cord, which is handy for using it outside, also.
    • The correction noise can be made audible or ultrasonic so humans can't hear it.
    • There is a high and a low sensitivity setting.
    • It works for all dogs at one time.
    • It is unobtrusive.  I've hidden it behind a vase on my mantel.

After having it for some time, I'd still recommend it, but there's a few qualifications I'd give for it:

    • Make sure that you deactivate it when you are making loud noises such as vacumming, watching loud movies, etc.  Otherwise it goes off almost continously during that time and the dogs either run and hide or just get used to it, so then it doesn't correct them anymore.
    • I no longer use it full time.  I only use it when I especially want the dogs to be quiet, like when repairmen are over.
    • There are some dogs that it just doesn't faze, like Noel.  I almost think she LIKES to hear it.

    Belly Bands

    By Sighthound Specialties.
For those males who are so sweet and kind, but need everyone to know that if it's on the floor it's theirs.  Belly bands are soft and easy to use and keep your sweet Chihuahua from lifting on everything.  They work and the boys get used to them quickly.  The woman that makes these is located near Grand Rapids, Michigan.  I found her on ebay and am so glad I did.  She also makes panties for your smallest girls on their "special days," we love so much.  eBay Keyword search: belly band

    Chihuahuas for Dummies

    By .
This is a great book!  Very informative and easy to follow.  I have read it several times since I got it now.  Also has a section to help you solve behavioral problems.  Very Informative.  I highly reccomend it to everyone.  Perfect for the person looking for a Chi or the person who has 10 Chi's!  Very nice book.  I paid about $13 for it at Barnes and Noble.

    Cozy Cave

    By .
I bought two of these for the dogs for Christmas.  I thought they'd crawl right in and love the bed, but it actually has taken them awhile to figure out.  At first, Paco would turn it over and sleep on the other side, like a cuddle ball.  I pushed treats as far inside the cover as I could - once the dogs went after the treats, they figured out how to use the bed.  Now it's one of the sought after beds in the house.

    Lectro-Kennel Heated Pad

    By Lectro.
This is the ABSOLUTE favorite item I've bought lately - from the dog's standpoint!  I was lucky and found it on clearance at Petco.  I made a fake lambswool cover for it (they are available for purchase at Petsmart).  There are often 4-5 Chis lying on this pad at one time.  Pica has made this her "home".

Cord is wrapped in a spiral chew-guard.  Pad is safe to keep plugged in constantly.

If you get this item, make sure the dog has a place to get off of it if the dog gets too hot.  In other words, don't place it in a kennel where it takes up all the room.

Oral-B Kids Battery Toothbrush with Replaceable Brushhead

    By Braun.
Braun Oral-B Kids Disney Battery Toothbrush with Replaceable Brushhead, Buzz LightyearThis toothbrush is terrific! The small spinning brushhead is easier to fit into tiny mouths than any other toothbrush I have found - even easier than big clumsy human fingers! The rotating bristles quickly and efficiently whisk away plaque even on the back sides of the teeth! The toothbrush is lightweight, easy to handle, battery operated, has a replaceable head, and is very affordable! I have tried just about every tooth cleaning device created for dogs and this works the best!

    Samsonite Leather Carrier

    By Samsonite Luggage.
I found the Samsonite Leather Carrier to be a great item.  It's also airline-approved for those of you who fly.  The cost is about $50.00 and we purchased it from our Chi's breeder.  But I think you could probably get them just about in any pet store.  Our Chi loves it.  It has the regular handles and also a detachable shoulder strap.  It zips open at the top.  And there is also a waffle-weave panel on top that you could open for air or so your Chi can see more.  It also zips open from the front so your Chi can use it as a portable bed, and walk in and out.  It comes in handy when I am driving somewhere with Stella by myself.  I put the carrier on the passenger's seat and run the seat belt through the handles of the carrier-so she is all safe and secure.

    Sling type carrier

By Outward Hound Pet Travel Gear.
I bought my sling type bag at an independent pet store and my Margie loves it.  I have a great dane who has to go for long walks and my littlr girl can't keep up.  I just load her up in her sling and away we all go.

It is durable, washable and says it hold up to 10 pds., but I think it would even go bigger.  Margie is 6 pds and has plenty of room.  The strap is adjustable and durable. It has a small zipper compartment and a collar latch built in.  Mine cost $38.00, a bit pricey, you may be able to search and find a better price, but I am glad I got it.  It is comfortable to wear and allows both my hands to be free without worry about her falling out.  It is deep, but allows her to sit or lay down and keep her head out.  She appears to be very comfortable during her walks.  I would recommend this for everyone who needs to tote their baby around.
