In the central prefecture of Crete I found also some good restaurants or the typical small places where Mamma is the chef de cuisine.

In a small agricultural village with the name of Vori, which is near festos in the Messara we can find the Tavern from Vangelia, named The Belgians. They choose for this name because the family lived for many years in Belgium. There for all of them speak also Flemish and even English, French and German.

The food here is for me the best I have ever tasted in Crete and its a pity that I dont live near Vori, because than you would find me there every day. Try their Mousakas or Soutsoukaki. And be sure that you arrive hungry, because portions are enormous. Bon appetite !!

Eating Trout in Zaros.

This village is famous for spring water and near Zaros you can find Trout farms. The fish is practically the only sweet water fish that you can eat on Crete. In the Tavers they make your wonderfull dish and I recommend a visit to the lake and the village center.

 

ATHINA TAVERN

I hope you are not in this area for the Hospital, but it is also on the road to Knossos, this Tavern named Athina. Very nice local dishes and also a grilled menu like souvlaki and lamb chops. Very friendly and before you know it the owner is coming with the Raki bottle.

The tavern is opposite the Heraklion hospital on the main road.
