SA ANTI-RAPE DEMO: "Cut off what bothers you'

Dec 20 2007 - Residents of the mainly 'coloured' suburb of Eersterust near Pretoria demonstrated with this anti-rape placard, which reads " Cut off what bothers'  outside the Pretoria magistrate's court, where a man appeared for the alleged rape of his 16-year-old daughter.

The girl testified that her dad had been raping her since the age of 3 on a weekly basis. He denied guilt to rape in the court during his bail-application, saying 'it had only been once or twice'.

About 100 residents demonstrated outside the courtroom. They warned that his safety 'could not be guaranteed if he got bail. We will find him as far away as Cape town if he is released," residents said angrily.

Sergeant Carina le Roux, who investigates the case, also feared that violence would break out in Eersterus if he were given bail. She said he may also try and commit suicide again as he had tried before. "The community is very involved in this case and tell us that if justice is not done, they will take the law into their own hands.'
