United Airlines offers discounts for USCA members

USCA members can now book personal travel through the U.S. Olympic Committee’s United Airlines Travel Desk, and receive the same discounts that the USCA gets when we fly United.

The discount is 7% for travel arranged more than 30 days in advance and 2 % for reservations made 30 days or fewer before take-off.

To check out the rates and book your travel, call the USOC United Travel Desk (1-800-841-0460), tell them you're with curling, and that you're eligible for the USOC’s Fan Club discount.

Founded in 1958, the AKCA is a group of curling enthusiasts whose goal is to promote the sport of curling within the Omaha Metro Area.

Curling can trace its roots 500 years ago in Scotland as farmers tossed river stones on frozen lochs for entertainment.  In the 1800's, Scottish immigrants expanded the sport westward into Canada where it holds much popularity and fandom, while in the early 1900's, curling expanded into continental Europe where it grows at a steady rate.  Curling is relatively new in Asia, but it's starting to earn popularity in Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

Internationally, curling is played in 46 countries and by 1.5 million people.  More-and-more countries are joining every year.

In 1992, the IOC granted curling full medal status for the 1998 Olympics.  After the 2002 & 2006 Olympics, curling has become a "cult hit" in the States with television exposure, new fans and new clubs.  To date, over 20 new clubs have formed since 2002 with countless new recruits.  NBC, ESPN and CurlTV.com showcase curling on a semi-regular basis between Olympic years.

Curling is social sport which can be played by all age groups and physical abilities.  Sportsmanship, teamwork, and fun are stressed over victory and trophies.  Interested people can be introduced to the sport via open houses, formal instruction classes or private group appointments.

Curling can best be described as a mix of shuffleboard, bocce, and bowling combined with the strategy of chess.  The basics are easy to comprehend but the strategy takes years to master.  Curling is a sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime!!!
