Rebellious, yet sexy, Samantha "Sam" McCall was down on her luck when she crossed paths with the handsome and debonair Jasper "Jax" Jacks. Unlike the usual sophisticated women Jax finds himself captivated by, he discovered himself having a growing attraction for Sam, and their colliding worlds took them on an adventure that had them competing for the same prize, a legendary winning poker hand said to bring fame and fortune to the holder.

In October 2003, Jax got word that his father, John Jacks, was near death. Jax's mother, Lady Jane, told him that John got sick when his prized possession was stolen. Known as "The Dead Man's Hand", the hand of cards that Wild Bill Hickock was holding when he was shot in the back, all five cards were stolen from John's hiding place for them, and one card was sent back to John as a ransom.

Jax went in search of the cards, in order get them all back and restore his father's will to live. Jax's quest led him to strikingly beautiful tomboy Samantha "Sam" McCall. Sam managed to steal Jax's one remaining card, until Jax tracked her to her old, rusted salvage boat and steal it back! Jax connected the dots and realized that Sam McCall was a descendent of the McCall that shot Hickock! Sam hoped to acquire all the cards in order to end her own family's streak of bad luck.

Jax and Sam banded together to find the cards, and followed them back to Port Charles, where Jax suspected the cards were in the possession of the Quartermaine family! Little did they know, AJ Quartermaine was behind the original theft of the cards.

Luke Spencer was on the run from murder charges and caught on to the value of the cards. Luke had convinced Skye to help him hide out from the police, and while planning to rip off the Quartermaines for enough money to leave the country, Luke found one of the cards in an old book about Wild Bill Hickock. Luke quickly plotted with Skye to snag all the cards and sell them back to Jax or the Quartermaines, depending on who turned out to be the highest bidder.

Jax asked Skye to keep an eye out for the cards at the Quartermaine mansion because he needed them to save his father's life. A guilt-ridden Skye stole the card that Luke had taken, and delivered it to Jax. Though Jax now had two cards, he didn't have them for long, since Sam stole them and jumped into the search for the other three.

The other three cards were in the possession of Dillon Quartermaine, who was asked by his mother Tracy to find them, and in return, Tracy would put a halt to Edward's plan to send Dillon away to military school. Sam fed Dillon a sob story about her dying father (eerily reminiscent of Jax's story), and then Luke approached Dillon about finding the cards so that Luke could keep himself from going to prison for the rest of his life. Georgie offered to hold the cards for safe keeping while Dillon decided who to give the cards to -- Sam, Luke, or Tracy?

Sam tracked the three remaining cards to Georgie's house and posed as a math tutor to gain access to Georgie's room. Meanwhile, Jax offered Dillon the hefty sum of $3,000,000 to turn over the three remaining cards to him! Dillon ran to Georgie to get the cards for Jax, but Georgie realized her math tutor was a fake and that Sam had stolen the cards!

Jax learned his father died before he could bring him the cards, and Jax blamed Sam. Sam surrendered the cards to Jax, but devious Tracy Quartermaine stole them! Tracy left one for Jax, as a symbol of her plans -- Tracy wanted to open a casino with Jax, using the cards as the draw to bring in customers.

The Quartermaines were not thrilled when Tracy returned to Port Charles again in October of 2003 and this time it looked like she was refusing to leave! Tracy set down roots in town, moved back into the mansion, and the Quartermaines knew it would mean nothing but trouble.

When Sam reacquired the cards, Tracy wanted them back, and urged Jax to seduce Sam for the cards. He couldn't keep emotions out of it, and began to feel for Sam again. Tracy's plans for a casino hit another snag when she learned that someone else still held the gaming rights in town, and the law in Port Charles was that there could be only one gambling establishment in town at any given time. Who held the gaming rights? Luke Spencer! Once Luke caught on to Tracy's plan, he decided he wanted to open a casino, with Skye's help. Sam had recently received the Haunted Star, Luke and Laura's old yacht, as a free gift from a winning slot machine, and Luke and Skye decided to open their casino on the Haunted Star.

Luke and Skye grew closer as they planned to open their casino, but they didn't have the necessary funds to get it started. That is, until they found a fortune under the floorboards! They sunk all the money into renovations and startup costs, not bothering to wonder whose money it was. Soon mob queen Faith Rosco staked her claim on the money! Faith was willing to go along with the casino, as long as she got her cut of the profits as a silent partner. Luke and Skye reluctantly agreed to work with Faith.

Meanwhile, Sonny Corinthos decided to kill Lorenzo Alcazar once and for all when Sonny learned his wife had feelngs for hm! Sonny's wife Carly begged him not to, but when it was clear Sonny wouldn't be deterred, Carly called Lorenzo to warn him and convince him to leave the country. In turn, Lorenzo called the police and they were witnesses when Sonny shot Lorenzo in the street. Fortunately for Lorenzo he was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Sonny fled the scene by taking Sam McCall hostage at gunpoint! As they drove nowhere in particular, Sam offered Sonny an understanding ear, and Sonny ended up turning himself in. Attempted murder charges were brought against Sonny, but with help from hotshot attorney Justus Ward, Sonny was acquitted.

Her hopes for a casino dashed, Tracy plotted with Jax to perform a hostile takeover on ELQ, but before she could do any damage, a fed up AJ beat Tracy to the punch and robbed the Quartermaines blind before leaving town with Lydia Karenin! The Quartermaines were broke! The Cassadines were also broke and Alexis Davis had to organize what was left of the Cassadine estate to maintain the family. Alexis had to put Wyndemere up for sale, but Emily Quartermaine stepped in and bought it for her fiancee Nikolas. Alexis was able to hire a butler, Mr. Cody, who she didn't know was Cody McCall, Sam McCall's estranged father.

Sam was the salvager Nikolas hired to unearth the wreckage of the Courage, an ages-old Quartermaine ship that was lodged under one of Nikolas's freighters. There was a legend that the Courage went down when pirates overran the boat for treasure. Legend appeared to be true when Sam unearthed a bejeweled tiara!

Nikolas and Emily went to the Quartermaines to inform them of the discovered treasure ship, and the Quartermaines wanted their cut too! Tracy proposed a split of the treasure between the Cassadines and the Quartermaines. But Tracy was determined not to share the treasure with anyone, and cut a deal with Sam to steal the treasure and squirrel it away for themselves.

Edward told Nikolas and Emily the story of Constance Quartermaine and her relationship with roguish pirate Blackthorn. After Blackthorn's diary was unearthed, Nikolas and Emily were enchanted by the romantic tale of Blackthorn and Constance's love, and couldn't help but notice similarities to their own love.

Nikolas and Emily's love couldn't help them when Mr. Cody was revealed as Sam's father and they learned that he was after the treasure as well. But the next discovery was Cody's dead body at Wyndemere!

Sonny was leaving on a business trip when Sam McCall forced her way on to his jet and begged for his help in getting her out of the country! Sam was headed for Azure Key, where she had hopes of finding the pirate Blackthorn's lost treasure. Sonny agreed, for a cut of the fortune.

In Azure Key, Sam's father Cody's nefarious partner in crime, Ben, arrived looking for the treasure as well! Ben told Sam that he killed her father for the treasure, and Ben decided to force himself on Sam if she wasn't willing produce the treasure! Sonny saved Sam by killing him, just as Jax arrived to tell Sam the news of her father's death. Now, it was up to Jax, Sam, and Sonny to find the treasure somewhere in Azure Key. Dastardly Helena Cassadine had purloined the pirate treasure, only for Nikolas and Emily to steal it from her! Back in Port Charles, when Sonny caught his wife Carly giving Lorenzo Alcazar a goodbye kiss, he turned to Sam McCall, and the two fell into bed together!

Nikolas and Emily put the treasure up for auction at the hotel, where they hoped the proceeds would help to revitalize the penniless Quartermaine and Cassadine families. Lorenzo Alcazar was the high bidder for Blackthorn's treasure, but it was stolen once again, right under the noses of hotel security -- by Luke! The evening went from bad to worse when the hotel's new security system proved too powerful for the building's old wiring to support. The result was an electrical fire which threatened the lives of nearly everyone in Port Charles!
