It is vitally important that when introdcing new foods that its done gradually, as it can cause your hasmter to have diarrhoea. Hamsters have 2 different types of stools, the colour of which is black, one that is soft, that they actually need to eat, to help in digestion, plus they can gain nutrients from, and the other is harder, which they discard.  When a hamster has a reaction to the new food, the stools are usually lighter in colour, and are quite sticky.

There is an important thing to remember though, one species of hamster needs special care when introducing new foods, and that is theCampbells hamster. Campbells are prone to diabetes, be aware of this when giving your Campbells anything that contains simple sugars.

Caradea (from the UK) has made up a list of jarred baby foods that are okay for hamsters - they're all "Stage1" or "Baby's First" kinds. They seemed less likely to have onions in it if it's for babies just getting weaned. I just went to the websites and read all the boring nutritional information. The bold text is the brand name and other label information if necessary. Just make sure to double check the labels before buying since this information could change at any time.
