Hello
I'm a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, currently deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom for the second time. I recently submitted my request for retirement since I am closing in on 20 years of service. I am also a Gulf war vet. for many years I have carried and reported symptoms related to the Gulf War sickness, all too often being dismissed as nothing. I deployed to Desert Shield with A Battery 333rd Field Artillery 1st Cavalry Division.
A few years after I returned from the Gulf War I recieved a letter (which I still have safely tucked away) from an Agency in the Goverment informing me that near my location where I was stationed during the Gulf War, a Stock pile/Cache of Chemical munitions was destroyed and it was possible that I could be affected by it. This compounded by the anthrax vaccines have created insurmountable obstacles for me. The Army diagnosed me with Eczema, I have also battled memory loss, sleepless nights, PTSD, etc. Before I joined the Army I had two healthy sons who are now of the ages of 19 and 20. I recently remarried and have a daughter who is 2 years old and of all things has been diagnosed with eczema, although her skin disorder is much worse than mine, her little folds on arms are extremely discolored were the eczema has been relentless. She requires special bath solutions for her skin and we have medical lotions that we have to apply to her so she doesn't breakout. We have to keep a close eye on her because she starts to itch then she scratches until she starts to bleed, it simply ravages her skin. It breaks my heart that I have to admit to her that it is because of me that she suffers of this skin disorder. I am much more worried about her condition than mine. I wonder if I have any recourse through the government?
While In the Gulf War our unit was given what I believe was unapproved pill that was to assist us with combating the effects of NBC contamination if we were to be involved in a chemical attack. We were taken these pills for a period of time we were then told to discontinue the use of these pills. I'm sure it was because of possible side effects.
I had lost contact with the majority of my old squad from the Gulf War. Recently by coincidence I came in contact with my section sergeant who was our NCOIC during the Gulf War. I learned that he was 100% medically retired because of skin disorders that he contracted during the Gulf War and deteriorated health.
I can go on and on, but i want to have my "ducks in a row" for when i set up my appointment through VA for my medical retirement evaluation. Not sure what my options are here, I want to ensure that the government provides not only me, but more so my daughter with the adequate care and compensation she deserves. I appreciate any help and assistance that can be provided to me. Thank you and God bless
Best regards

I am a former Marine myself - also the wife of a Marine - and when my husband and I read your story, it was heartbreaking for us, because we too are in your position (as are a lot of other vets - and families) on this sight. We are the parents to two (DNA genetic match twins) girls. Both have the severe eczema that you are talking about - the first of the two - got the worst of it, along with a cardiac issue that is having to be monitored and the second was born with genetic "mutations" to her kidneys and bladder that just recently had to be "completely" reconstructed so both would function correctly - because her one kidney - was in failure (just after birth) and the doctors were trying to save it, if possible to avoid an early kidney transplant. Our pediatrician who is well known here in Cincinnati, Ohio has called "General Bates" many times on our behalf about our daughters medical conditions to try to get us help from the military - but - the only people who helped us were this web sight and the people at DAV, who have been wonderful to us. Our pedia doc has both our girls on these "medical creams" for their skin, special soaps to bathe, special laundry soaps for their clothing (and many other things) that we've been advised to avoid, to help curb, the eczema situation. I don't know if any of this basic info I'm sending will help - but - you're about to discover the wonderful world of "government politics" at its finest. Anything to screw those of us, who have worn our uniforms and done what we were asked to do. When the folks on here give you advice on who to contact and places to try for help. Listen to them, they're on your side - and they're in the same boat - fighting the same fight.
