The Rev. Dr John MacGilchrist - Bowmore-born Minister of The 'South Church' from 1899 till 1911, he married Agnes Caroline Burns of Castle Wemyss and both are buried at Largs Cemetery
David Bruce Nicol - Minister of The 'South Church' from 1911 until 1920, his Skelmorlie days are remembered in this short memoir by his wife
* * * * * * * * * * * South Church Organ History - As Newton McCartney’s 1956-written “One Hundred Years - The History of Skelmorlie and Wemyss Bay South Church” records, “It is roundly asserted that the Skelmorlie Church’s organ was the first ever played in a Church of Scotland service. It was actually the pioneer organ of The Church of Scotland . . . . . Anthems were sung and, to the amazement of the whole community, prose Psalms were chanted . . . . these innovations confined to the afternoon service and, at the morning service, the old tradition was adhered to until, gradually, a more tolerant attitude came into being”, the Skelmorlie Church initially ridiculed by some as “Boyd’s Theatre” !
