Beware!    Beware!   Beware!

of the

Alien Invaders

The following invaders have been seen in the Irvington area.

euynomus

Euyonmus can and given the chance will grow over anything standing still.  Euyonmus can be a very beautiful and useful ground cover. Care must be taken to trim often and keep the trimmings from escaping.  Euyonmus should not be put in your compost heap, it could root and end up in every flower bed on your property.

garlic mustard, Alliaria petiolata

Garlic mustard rapidly takes over woodland floors choking out native wildflowers.  Consider these plants armed and dangerous with hundreds of seeds to be dispersed.   According to legend this biennal herb native to Europe was brought to the new world by  colonists.

honeysuckle, Lonicera eurasian shrub and vine species

Honeysuckle creates a heavy shade and it`s roots compete with the native plants.  After our wildlife has eaten all the native berries they flock to the eurasian honeysuckles.  The eurasian honeysuckles have an abundance of berries and our birds are unwitting helping to spread these honeysuckles even further.
