2005 June Afternoon in an Irvington Garden

I had the pleasure, Sunday, June 26th, to spend the afternoon painting in a lovely garden with a century-old home on South Audubon Road.  Sitting at a little wooden table my grandfather made for my mother as a child, I felt I was painting in an earlier time; the simplicity and charm of the house, garden, and event itself-  an old fashioned garden tour in a turn-of-the-century neighborhood- was inspiring to the soul.

Throughout the day, vistors came and went, commenting on the peace and tranquility of the shady backyard setting, with its hosta, bright reddish-rose caladium, pond, and old fashioned swing.  I noticed as I painted the nice feeling of neighborliness, which seems to come with living in Irvington...

I wouild like to thank the Irvington Garden Club for inviting me to paint; every brush stroke was painted on site and I hope I in some way captured the charm of this Irvington garden as well as the warmth of its owner, who told me, "This is where I come each day to be with God."

When do we meet?

During the winter months the garden club meets at 7:00 p.m. on the last Monday of the month in the Irvington United Presbytarian Church on 55 S. Johnson Avenue, behind the new Irvington library.  Our May meeting is held on the Monday before Memorial weekend. During the summer we will be enjoying our meetings in a few of our neighbors gardens. The December meeting is held at the Benton House.

Why a garden club?

The garden club hopes to:
  • exchange experiences, plants and seeds

  • promote interest in gardening and landscaping improvements

  • encourage conservation of native and heirloom trees and plants

  • spread the gospel of beauty throughout the Irvington community

Where are we located?

Irvington is an old historic neighborhood located 5 miles to the east of downtown Indianapolis.   Built in the 1870s as a surburb, Irvington has been surrounded by the city of Indianapolis.
