       Jos¨¦ Mar¨ªa Guti¨¦rrez ¡°Guti¡± is a product from Real Madrid¡¯s lower teams. Ever since he came in, the coaches highlighted his quality. He has been in constant evolution since he joined the lower teams. In season 95/96 he jumped into the first team under Jorge Valdano¡¯s leadership. He has proved that he has a place in the team during the six seasons he has been playing in the first squad. Besides, his constant progression have led him to the National Team on several occasions. As years go by, Guti proves to be one of the midfielders with the most quality in Spanish football over the past decade.

National team

       After winning the 1998 UEFA European Under-21 Championship with Spain, Guti made his full debut on 5 May 1999 against Croatia. He missed the 2002 FIFA World Cup due to an ankle injury and did not make the final squad for UEFA EURO 2004?. Was recalled for the 2006 World Cup qualifier against San Marino and celebrated with Spain's fourth goal in the 5-0 win, but has been unable to win a regular role.

Club

       The Madrid-born Guti made his senior debut against Sevilla FC in 1995. In 1996/97 he played 14 league games as Madrid won the title, and the following term he made his UEFA Champions League bow as part of the squad that claimed the trophy. By 1998/99, he was a regular in the team as, and has remained a frequent presence as a starter or substitute.He won another Champions League in 1999/00, scored 14 league goals the next season as Madrid again won the Primera Divisi¨®n, and continued his form in 2001/02 as Madrid won Europe's premier club prize yet again. He then played 34 times in their Primera Divisi¨®n-winning side in 2002/03, but was unsettled by David Beckham's arrival the following season.

2003/04

       Although unsettled by the arrival of David Beckham, Madrid would demand €40m for Guti's services under his contractual release fee. He made 26 league appearances as they stuttered to a disappointing fourth position and was sent off as the deposed champions lost the Copa del Rey final to Real Zaragoza.

       Despite intense competition, Guti played over 2,000 minutes of football with Madrid, bringing an extra dimension to the team. An influential presence despite Madrid's barren campaign, he created memorable goals for Ronaldo against Valencia CF and Real Sociedad de F¨²tbol.
