    Press Release 10/10/07
k.d. lang's new album, Watershed, will be released by Nonesuch Records on January 28, 2008.  Watershed comprises 11 new songs written and produced by k.d., and recorded in California this year.

Watershed is the first album of newly written material from the four-time Grammy winner since 2000's Invincible Summer, and her first studio album since 2004's acclaimed Canadian songbook, Hymns Of The 49th Parallel.  It is also the first self-produced collection of her celebrated 25-year career.

An itinerary of international tour dates to follow the album's release will be announced shortly. (see tour section on kdlang.com)

    k.d. says
She's very excited and proud about it and it's a big piece of  her that she's sending out to the world. She writes melodies first then lyrics. She took things from conception and kept embellishing the songs until she thought they were finished. Wide ranging performances and very first vocals on some of the songs.
There are highly arranged string arrangements on some of the songs (by Teddy) The songs were written over 6 years. She really likes I dream of Spring ( a beautiful song)and jealous Dog because it's so quirky, just a performance she did one morning so it's pretty raw (another Hooked on Junk? haha)

    From a recent interview:
Lang's new album, Watershed, signals a change of heart and shift in priorities.
The album's centrepiece, Shadow and the Frame, is a peaceful meditation about her journey inward.
“I found myself and what I became, having nowhere else to lay the blame,'' she sings.
“The darker side of me and my discovery. The shadow and the frame are, indeed, the same.
“Does a taste for truth disappear with youth? Are my efforts all wasted . . . fading on the vine?''
Watershed, Lang says, is about change.
“A change in me, a change in direction - emotionally - and a change in priorities,'' she says.
“I have changed a great deal since my 40th birthday. I had a lot of personnel changes in my professional life.
“It's a culmination of those things that led me to the album title.''

Watershed is disarmingly simple. Lang, who also produced the album, often swoons about lessons learned over moody keys or sparse rhythms.
“I wanted to retain a lot of the initial creative moments that are hard to capture again,'' she says.
“After the songwriting process and original demo, you usually take the song to a producer and work it up with a band. Then it becomes something different.
“But, to me, the real creative magic is in the early stages of conception. A lot of the performances on this album are early takes, or sometimes the very first take.
“It became a matter of what feels right - what has an essence, what has honesty and emotion to it.''

On November 12 this year, Nonesuch will release ‘I Dream Of Spring’, the first single from the new album.  On Saturday November 17 k.d. will perform the song exclusively on the last series of Parkinson on ITV1.

k.d. has been singing one track entitled "I Dream of Spring" "which exemplifies the long wait for the thaw" (Cold Dark Places)
from the new album at her recent shows. Other songs previewed have been  "Fueled by Desire" and "Coming Home" (very country) "Once in a While"
The album reportedly opens with the track I Dream Of Spring, in which Lang sings about “the streets of Melbourne”.

"I have been doing so many classic songs and when you're performing that stuff the bar is pretty high, so now that I'm working on my own songs again I feel like I'm taking it a little easier," lang said during a telephone interview. "My own songs actually conjure up a little bit more invulnerability."

Who else is on the album?

from David Piltch about the new album:

Also around this time was the start of a long and creative relationship with kd lang. We recorded several records together, toured, and teamed to write songs. kd's new record will have five songs which she and I wrote and recorded in her Art Kitchen in L.A. and in my garage in Santa Barbara.

    also

Carmen Rizzo has also contributed to one track

Teddy Boroweicki has arranged strings and plays on I Dream of Spring as does Danny Frankel.Greg Liesz and David Piltch

Her next album (Watershed) may feature all this and more.

"It seems like an absolute blend of everything," Lang says. "There are pieces of my whole career in there."

“The songs are definitely in a singer-songwriter style,” she said. “Very intimate and very personal.”

The recipe for lang's upcoming release, her first set of original material since 2000's "Invincible Summer," will blend her sea of styles - country, folk, jazz and pop. Not shocking considering her eclectic choices over the years: an album with Tony Bennett, 2002's "A Wonderful World," and interpretations of iconic Canadian songwriters' tunes on "49th Parallel." 2006's "Reintarnation" is her latest release - a retrospective of her early, country-laced ditties.

"It's all the genres I've ever been involved in compressed into one record," she says about the upcoming release.

You love to write when you’re feeling in love, and obviously you have a new CD coming out. Are you happily in love right now? Are you writing from a place of happiness and joy in your life right now?

    kdl: I definitely am, yes.

When can we expect a new album of original k.d. lang songs?
February 12, 2008. I don’t have a title for it yet, and I don’t even really know what it’s going to be like yet. It’s just me. It’s no particular genre—just my music.

    It’s unclassifiable k.d. lang?
    Yes, quintessential.
