Hi Y'all, eh, (as kd put it)
:-)
Sorry for the delay..... I'm just now catching my breath!
I cannot tell you how amazing this performance was! I also cant believe how closeIwas to her! (Front row center!)
This event was sponsored by a wonderful organization which I am sure you read in the review listed from Fort Worth Star telegram. kd came out and started with "Dont smoke in bed" which was recieved with thunderous applause. I was too engulfed to jot down the set list (sorry).....but good news.... I did sneak my camera in, but not sure if they will come out. I used it without a flash so security wouldnt tackle me, but my camera and the speed of film should produce decent pictures...I hope. I will let you know as soon as I get them back.
kd sang for about an hour...I would have loved more, but hey....what she gave us was amazing.
She recieved a standing ovation for "Crying" (naturally) and really touched the audience by her loving tribute to Roy Orbison. The second song she sang, "Simple" , was one of my favorite songs that she performed. Her voice resonated through the hall to a degree that you actually "felt" her voice.
Before she sang "The Valley", by Jane Siberry, she stated that she normally doesnt talk about what inspired other songwrites to write songs, but because of the sponsor being Alliance, she thought it was appropriate. She said Jane Siberry, who lives in Canada, at the time was living on a hill that overlooked a facility for the challanged. Every day she would sit on her porch and watch this man walk.....every day, rain or shine, without fail, he was out there walking. She said he inspired Jane by his determination and she wrote this song. If you havent heard this song, pay special attention to the lyrics because after that explaination, the song really touched me. She also stated that one of the most important things we can do in life is to step into someone elses shoes and see where they are coming from,... that helping and loving your fellow man is what life is all about .
After "crying",.....someone shouted "Do it again" and she feel on the floor and started singing it like she was about to faint. It was funny. After she did Miss Chatalaine, with her very "unique" style of dancing, :-)there was a man in the 5th row that was looking at her funny and she stopped and said "I would LOVE to know what you are thinking right now." He just smiled and said "Super"......not sure what that meant but it was funny the way that she said that to him.
She did say the album somes out July 27th,2004. All songs are by Canadian songwriters. She said "You'ns gotta go buy it" She was quickly corrected by several people who yelled "Its'y'all' " ......she just looked at him and said "Okay, y'all,....eh.' Everyone laughed....she said "Dont forget who is holding the microphone" :-)
When she was introducing the band members, she got
to the keyboard player and said that they are so honored to have such a celebrity with them. She said that he (cant remember his name...oops) was actually a question on the game show "Jeopardy",....and that the contestant even got it right." Then she sang the jeopardy theme song in a bold voice that had everyone laughing.
My very favorite song that she sang was "Love is Everything", also by Jane Siberry. She actually brought me to tears on that one. Amazing,.....simply amazing!
She did an encore of "Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray". I was hoping the set would last longer than it did but I suppose even if it had been 3 hours long I would have wanted more too.
This was an amazing show by the most amazing singer on the planet. She was simply stunning. She was wearing the tibetan style skirt and shirt. It was very interesting. Hopefully when I get the pictures back, if they come out, I will be able to share it with you all. She has lost weight,...very trim and fit. Absolutely beautiful! Oh yes,....and barefoot of course. I took a picture of her feet and she just find of looked at me. hehehe
When the concert was over, I gave one of the sound guys a gift I had brought her...I hope she got it. I was going to hand it to her but she didnt do the hand shaking bit.......she bowed several times though. I got her some cuff links and tie tack with the treble cleff sign engraved on them. I hope she got them and I hope she liked them.
Anyhow, that was it.....one of the most amazing evenings of my life! She is simply breathtaking and I urge everyone lucky enough to be within traveling distance to go to this show. Trust me,.....well worth every penny and then some.
I will let you all know if the pictures turn out.

My Evening With Jane Siberry
From: sojourner  (Original Message) Sent: 31/05/2004 22:32

I know there are some Jane Siberry fans on the board, and also she has a connection with k.d., so I thought I'd post this for those who are interested....

I am recovering from euphoria that overcame me on Saturday evening when I met Jane Siberry. Yes, I talked to her. Not just for a minute or two, but for a good ten minutes or longer. We talked about k.d. amongst other things….

There’s a local arts festival happening here on June 12, called WestFest. It is a “celebration of art, music and life” and the headliner is Jane Siberry!

Last week I went searching for more details on the web. I made a phone call to clear up some confusion and inadvertently – and serendipitously – ended up speaking to the festival organizer. She was ‘interested in my interest’, and  invited me to attend a Launch Party for the festival this past Saturday evening and promised that Jane would be present. Also promised me free food, bar, and a live band! What’s to lose?
I grabbed my most adventurous and assertive friend and we set out to see if this might be true – my two latest Siberry CDs concealed in my handbag.

The gathering wasn’t as large as I expected.  Maybe 100 – 125 people tops, while I was there. And YES!!!  Jane was there. She spoke briefly and humorously and I was caught up in her speaking voice the same as when I heard her sing at Christmas.

Afterwards people were just hanging about.  Jane was focused on a fellow she was with (husband? boyfriend?) who seemed pretty caught up with her. While I was circling around trying to get another Perrier to fortify myself, my pragmatic and assertive friend (who has never heard a Siberry recording in her life) buttonholed Jane and told her I wanted to speak with her.

Honestly, no one else was hounding her. They acted as if they already knew her well – or had already talked to her.

I loved being in her presence. I loved how she spoke.  Every word is articulated like poetry. I felt like I came alive when I started talking to her.

So – I told her I loved her Shoshan concert at Christmas and am still playing the CD. Told her I dragged my husband who’d never heard of her to the concert and converted him! She seemed pleased (and perhaps amused) by that. “You mean he went, and he didn’t know what he was going to hear?”

I asked her if she’d heard k.d.’s covers of her two songs, “Love is Everything” and The Valley”. No, she hasn’t, she asked me if I had. I told her no, but I’d heard reports they were amazing. I asked her if she was pleased k.d. was doing her music, and she said yes, definitely; she very much respects and admires k.d. as a singer, (I did know that.) and it was an honour to have her chose her songs.

I asked her to sign my CDs and she was pleased to do so – but insisted on finding a Sharpie marker so it would show up on the glossy surface! She wrote a lovely personal inscription on one which I’m not going to share here    and on the other (Shoshan the Palace) she asked for my husband’s name and wrote it to both of us.

I asked about a song that intrigued me (The Mystery at Ogwen’s Farm), and she told me a story of some Welsh relatives.

Jane really engaged with both of us. She told my friend she looked “intriguing”, and asked what she did. Never one to be intimidated, my friend launched into a description of her new real estate venture, and  mentioned trying to find a slogan such as “Finding the house for you…” ? – and Jane said “No, you should use home, not house”, and began fumbling around with words.

At this point, I did the unthinkable: I interrupted Jane Siberry in her creative process and interjected with a phrase of my own. What was I thinking??  But Hallelujah, she said, “Yes, that’s it – perfect! That’s what you want to say. Are you a writer?” she asks me.

O.K.., I know, I know - this was just a casual conversation, it doesn’t mean that much, but I could have died of joy at that moment.

What else can I say? She was gracious, classy, a real gem. She’s cut her hair medium short. She’s smaller than she appeared on stage. She exudes this creative aura that makes me feel like I’m blossoming. You are my muse, Jane.

When others started moving in, and it was time to go, I thanked her for signing the CD’s and  -  I cannot believe this either – I gave her a hug!!  I am smitten.

If anyone reading this lives in Eastern Ontario or Western Quebec and wants to see Jane perform for FREE on Saturday June 12, she’s on Main Stage at the festival at 9:00 p.m. Details here:http://www.westfest.ca/site/default.asp?strPage=home

From Gajeanne
My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of seeing k.d. in Vancouver at the
lovely Orpheum on Monday night.  k.d. coming off like a kharmeleon of sorts,
currently a blue tara in a modified monk’s skirt, a buddhist tonglen songstress
running out on yet another limb in the genre tree and adapting to it with skill.
The illusion makes her a little hard to find but it seems to be a necessary
survival trait for her creativity.  And as far as the tonglen goes, someone with
her lung capacity could do a lot of good.  Breathe in...the dual mortality of
our mothers, the perils of sharing menopause, the onset of blindness in our
dog. Breathe out...the Canada that lets us sit here married, the right work
that allows us to afford good seats, the coincidence that our lives be timed to
each others and to hers, and the simple pleasure of getting to sit here and
hear her sing.  As far as the show, Tania Miller and the VSO did 3 pieces of
music, one of them k.d. noted with humor was Aaron Copeland’s Rodeo Hoe Down
that
is used for beef commercials in the U.S.  k.d. was in excellent voice, not
missing anything that I could hear, though late in the show she was working
harder but her toes kept good time with the music. The set list was the same as
previous shows.  Incredibly moving however were the new songs - especially
Hallelujah and Love Is Everything. Being a huge fan of Jane Siberry’s I was
worried
about how I would feel about covers of The Valley and Love Is Everything but
I’m not worried anymore.  Ben Mink was in the audience and was made to stand
and recieve his applause.  To news that Calgary lost the hockey game she
commented “dam* Americans.”  She promised the audience that someday she would
return
to Vancouver to live but not for years. Greg, David, Teddy, and Danny
Franko(?) on drums backed her up with Charles Floyd conducting the orchestra
behind
the band.  They gave out a CD sampler at the end of the show with Goldrush and
Love Is Everything on it. She bowed for extended periods over and over again
during applause.  The overt buddhism seems to be a good fit for her, someone who
has always been a light unto herself, and whether she relishes it or not, to
others. It’s not for me though, the 3rd and 4th Noble Truths being the big
sticking points, besides I’d look terrible in that skirt and have used up all
111,000 prostrations on you know who. If you ever see me doing anything that
looks like yoga, call 911 - I’ve got a bad cramp.
May all sentient beings and k.d. find whatever light it is they are looking
for.
