Tug of War Basics
Introduction
Tug of war is a Sport pulled in over 20 countries.
Ireland is currently considered one of the strongest countries in the sport.
Championships
Championships are held every Sunday from May to September in various locations throughout Ireland. Regional/Provencial Championships are run during May and June. National Championships are held during July and August. The teams then have preperation pulls for the European/World Championships, which are usually held in September each year. The European and World Chanpionships are held on each alternate year.
The Pull
A match is pulled on a Heat or Pull basis.
The best of 3 pulls is declared the winner.
A winner of a Pull is where one team (the winner) pulls the other team 4 meters.
A Team consists of 8 pullers and a non-pulling coach.
Teams at the Championship are put into a Group, and Pull all the teams in the Group.
The The Top two teams then have a Final.
This may vary as specific competition rules vary.
The Rope
The Rope is 100mm/4in in diameter and 32 meters long.
A Judge will referee the pull to ensure that the pull is within the rules.

There are currently 60 teams approx. in Ireland.
