WIPER MOTOR AND DRIVE  Modification and Installation

The wiper motor and drive used in the Liege is the Lucas two speed with park type as used on earlier British cars. If attainable the assembly used on the Austin Allegro has all the correct parts, i.e. the 130 degree drive wheel and the correct wheel boxes for optimum wiper sweep on the windscreen.

The Reliant Kitten wiper drive assembly may look the same, but it will not fit as the spindles are shorter. The drive spindles (which push up through pre-marked holes in the bodywork in front of the windscreen) should measure 2. 9/16 inches from the base to the end of the spline. The two rubber spacers, which together measure 1.5/8 inches long, hold the drive spindles at an angle.

1. Remove the gearbox cover from the wiper motor and check that the gear is stamped ‘130 degrees’. If it isn’t correct, it will need to be replaced.

2. To facilitate the correct wiper parking position on the drivers side of the windscreen, it is necessary to move round the nylon parking hump on the upper face of the gear so that it is on the same side as the drive pin on the underside.

3. The inner drive cable should be removed and cut to a length of 32 inches, (from the drive pin hole to the end.)

4. The wiper drive outer tubes should be cut to new lengths. The first section next to the motor should be cut to given a 6 inch radius and cut to 10.1/4 inches, after replacing the attachment nut, the end should be reflared giving a finished length of 10 inches. Between the two wheel boxes the tube should be cut to 15.3/4 inches long giving a finished length is 15.1/2 inches (flared end to flared end), the end tube is 2.1/2 inches long. All sharp edges should be removed from the tubes and the inner cable greased to reduce noise. The maximum force required to move the cable is 6 lbs, this can be checked while the cable is disconnected from the wiper motor.

5. When reassembling the drive, the wheelboxes should be fitted with the drive cable upper most and the gearwheel below. If the chrome retaining nuts are in poor condition they should be replaced. Note that wheel boxes are different sizes. The one with the 1.3/8 inch diameter gear is fitted to the offside and the other wheelbox with the larger 1.3/4 inch diameter gear is fitted to the nearside. This allows the drivers wiper to overlap the centre of the screen.

6. The wiper motor is fitted above the passenger footwell, by two M6 Pozi set screws, to the inside of the bulkhead as marked on the glass fibre.

7. Wiper arms and blades are original MG/Sprite type (the type that are adjustable and have a screw clamp to retain the wiper arm to the splined drive). These are supplied with the build parts by Liege Motor Company. Finally, if necessary, adjust the bend in the arm so that the blade, when parked, is level with the base of the screen and adjust the length so that the blade does not touch the frame as it sweeps.
