LOW MOOR B VERSUS GT HORTON HORTON CHURCH B
For what was billed as a clash of the top two, turned into a day of reflection and if onlys for Low Moor B as the afternoon wore on.
Both teams arrived short of one or two players, Low Moors list including both last weeks openers - Scarborough and Holdsworth, plus Curtis and Haley, 4 of our usual top 6! Hmm.. However, two new faces to the Low Moor dressing room Paul Topham and Andy Hodson were brought in to strengthern our side. And that they did.
The toss was won and Low Moor fielded first, on a hot day as it turned out down at the Moors, and we started well. 2 wickets in the first 4 overs saw Gt Horton 17 for 2. Unfortunately it took andother hour before the next wicket fell, as Jowitt and Kirkby rebuilt slowly while not offering much in the way of chance to LMHT. Our two new faces led the way in the field, and the team followed the example. Restricting the scoring rate to a veritable snails pace.
With 14 overs to go Gt Horton were 110 for 3, and Low Moor were looking orderly. But with wickets to spare and overs remaining, Gt Horton capitalised as Low Moor backed off the field looking to save boundaries. This plan unfortunately didn't work as a stream of middle order batters got in easily as we stood back. Hindsight shows that perhaps we should have brought on spinners Joe and Brian a little earlier to let the batsmen have to hit the ball rather than it come onto them, especially with a set back field. With 4 overs to go in the innings our spinners did indeed tighten our game back up, but by then the horse had bolted.
Alas, they thraped away, and despite wickets falling, runs flowed also. Low Moor let Grt Hortons innings off the hook and they set us 195 to win.
Half time saw another setback as Simon Broadbent was called away to his wifes side as she had tripped during a a run and broken her ankle.
Looking around our changing room at half time, and the heat of the day and our impressive efforts in the field seemed to have taken a lot out of our boys, I know I felt shattered and could have done with an hours break rather than 15 minutes.
Low Moor opened with skipper Gavin accompanying regular opener Wally Walton at the crease. Again hindsight takes me back to the Adwalton game when Scarbo was missing and John Fishwick filled in so well at the top of the order. This appears an oversight, but a costly one at that, as the steady start we might have had was ruined by a 9 over spell from the two Mohammed's, with the skipper first to go, ct at slip, then Kelly was Ct behind 2 overs later and then Stevenson cleaned up playing the wrong line. And our impoteus was smashed at 19 for 3. Paul Topham came in at 5 and despite a score of 8, (I'm sure he got more than that!) he stuck around with Wally for a mini revival before an un-called for Run Out set the rot for us once more.
Up to this point, these two had started to look comfortable, but it was backs to the wall again. John Fishwick finally came in at 6 and after an initial settling in period, started to look okay. None of his back problems from the week before were appearing to effect him.
Next, disastoursly for us, he was hit on the ankle bone, and after hobbling a little called for a runner. Gavin stepped out for him, and for a little while Low Moor looked useful again.
Wally was skittled next up as our score crept up to 90, and John batted gamely on, but again a flurry of wickets as Brian and Andy were out without scoring.
Joe was caught after a brief spree.
Finally, Gavin was run out on Johns behalf despite having passed the stumps, but as we know sometimes the fact that a throw was impressive and hits the stumps directly must mean you're out. John was inconsoleable and he and Gavin trudged off in disbelief as Low Moor were all out inside 28 overs.
MAN OF THE MATCH (LMHT PLAYER) - J Fishwick
John's innings was the true highlight of the day, battling against a good opposition and the injury he sustained. He was a true inspiration for the players after a poor overall second half display from LMHT B.
