REHOUSING GUIDELINES FOR MAREMMA OWNERS WHO ARE LOOKING TO FIND NEW HOMES FOR THEIR DOGS
If the owner or the breeder is involved in the rehoming here are some important points to guide you with your decision:
- Has the breeder been notified, and are they willing to take the dog back?
- get a history on the dog, it’s past experiences (training, socialisation) and any behavioral problems
- help determine the individual needs of the dog and how they impact placement (i.e. dog avoids children, therefore should not be placed in home with children)
- Compile your list of “qualified” new homes from interested parties
- After a good match has been determined, interview prospective families, by phone contact and if possible home check.
- discuss costs (if any) with adoptive family (minimum shipping costs, any payment required to relinquishing family) discuss veterinary examination and any necessary vaccinations, explain that it is beneficial that the new owner pick up the dog rather than have it shipped, this enables new owners to see dogs acting normally on a familiar territory.
- Please do not be too hasty to place your dogs into the first homes which contact you regarding your dog, dogs are as individual as the situations that they may find themselves in. A dog which is placed into an unsuitable environment will soon find itself needing another new home.
- Care should be taken when rehousing suburban/companion dogs directly onto properties with livestock if the dog has never be around livestock previously. With time and patience they adjust to new environments, in the right situations, it can be done successfully
My role is to facilitate a safe and beneficial placement for all involved, without the dog finding itself 'locked up' in the local pound/shelter where chances are very slim of finding itself a new home and family.
PLEASE NOTE
If owner or the breeder is involved, then the dog is a “Rehouse” not a 'rescue', this must be stated in description. We may assist in the placement of the dog by supplying contacts for potential adoptees, but will not take any responsibility for placement.
Dogs advertised on this page MUST BE DESEXED before they are placed into new homes, to ensure that they do not fall into the hands of 'puppy farmers'. Please feel free to contact me if you feel the need to talk regarding rehoming your dog.
