Metal Gear Solid* aka Metal Gear Ghost Babel is no ordinary game. It was created by Hideo Kojima, and if that's not enough, it's a game with such great music, gameplay, graphics and storyline that you won't be able to put your Game Boy down once you've picked it up. Just like Mr Kojima's other "Metal Gear" games, it involves a mercenary named Solid Snake who went into retirement after fighting a huge robot both at Outer Heaven and in Zanzibar. But a new robot has been built codenamed "Metal Gear Gander" and Solid Snake has been sent out again to stop the terrorists with their Metal Gear!
MGS involves sneaking around rather that shooting everyone in sight. This may sound boring, but you'd never believe the fun you can have being stealthy rather than all brawn and no brains!
You control Solid Snake as he goes round the terrorist base looking for clues, hostages, terrorists and the mighty Metal Gear. To complete his mission, Snake must rescue the terrorists' hostages so that he can get the information he needs to stop Metal Gear launching a deadly nuclear warhead.
A range of skills, weapons and items are necessary in MGS to stay alive and one seperate part of the game known as VR Training is there to help you get used to the tactics you need to survive in the actual game. The VR Training teaches you the necessary skills such as using your weapons in an effective way, creating diversions and staying in the shadows out of enemy sight...
Even people who don't like this type of game will be drawn into the amazing plot as things start to make sense, Snake meets a host of characters and has several challenges to complete - trust me, this game is worth the money. Remember that the creater of this game made the very popular "Metal Gear" back in the 80s, followed by its successful sequel "Metal Gear 2" and then went on to make the world famous "Metal Gear Solid" for the PlayStation. But don't be fooled - this is a completely different game although the amount of pleasure you get out of it is more than you'd ever imagine!
*The Japanese game is called "Ghost Babel"; everywhere else it seems to be known as "Metal Gear Solid" - apparently this was to familiarise it as more people would be more likely to buy a game called "Metal Gear Solid" than "Ghost Babel". Unfortunately, its worldwide title is not only confusing as it is named after a game which is not the same at all, but is also misleading in that the "Solid" suffix was originally intended for 3D games in the series only - something which this game for the Game Boy Color was not! To save confusion, on this site it'll be referred to as Metal Gear: Ghost Babel.
You have to play it to know what all the fuss is about!
