GS1000S
I'm going to fix up a Suzuki GS1000S "Wes Cooley Replica"
bought on 13th of October 2002.
A few things about the bike, there are a few details that point to a production date of 1979 including the datestamp 2/79 on the wheels and brakehoses, but the date on the papers is 1980.While working on the bike I've come across some bolts like the ones that hold the brake calipers to the front forks who are drilled for wire locking that is mandatory for circuit racing, the Lockhart oil cooler with Yoshimura
adaptor and the Piranha digital ignition. Maybe a life as a race bike in the far past???
The engine is not the original (blown up while racing?), but the exhaust and rear shocks are stock while the're normally are rusted through and worn out after a couple of years on the road. Another weird thing was that the bike was equipped with bigger main jets and needles but ran WITHOUT an airfilter in the stock airbox.
As the bike is now it needs a headgasket, chain and sprockets 2 new tires, front fork seals, swingarm bearings and a lot of cleaning, grinding, polishing and painting to get it back into a nice state.
*******Update******
Maybe the answer lies in this little plate
This plate sits on the side of the back end where the American models have reflectors, the colors are those of the German flag, maybe it was ridden (raced?) for a year there and then imported to Holland???
5-11-02
Working on replacing the head gasket and am changing the color of the wheels from blue and white done by a previous owner to the stock colors black and clearcoat.
4-1-03
Ran a new live wire to the clock in the dashboard.
Replaced tachometer cable .
New air valve on the front fork.
Replaced front fork seals.
Sanded and polished lower front forks.
Replaced fork oil with new 20W.
Polished rear shocks nicely clearcoated by some previous owner.
Checked floatheight, manually synched the carburators.
Installed an airfilter.
#96 mainjet instead of #110.
Resprayed front brake calipers.
Polished fuel cap, nice little job
Put in new bearings for the swingarm.
Sprayed said swingarm (black).
Cleaned intake and exhaust valves.
Changed valve seals.
Finished replacing head gasket.
Replaced chain and sprockets.
New rubber caps on the chrome passenger rail.
New "Euro" model licenceplate instead of the picknick table sized original.
Today,(7-2-2003) rode the bike for the first time, only runs on prime, probably have to put the vacuum hose on carb #3 instead of carb #2 , valves and carburators still need to be adjusted. Rides pretty well, much more stable even with worn out tires, no more leaks form the cylinder head, front brake still spongy dispite new brake fluid and degreasing the discs.
