STANISLAUS COUNTY SHELTER NEWS
It's pretty sad when a homeless service is discontinued or reduced. The latest casulties are Bethesda Ministries and Agape House, both Christian rehab & shelters. Bethesda Ministries has closed down completely and Agape House has had to reduce it's number of residents by 75% due to complaints from the neighbors even though there has been no problems. These reductions has forced about 40 more people out of a structured living facility and back out on the streets. Please call your City and County officials and tell them WE NEED A YEAR-ROUND SHELTER!!!!!!

The Salvation Army Emergency Winter Shelter, located at 320 9th Street in Modesto, has opened. There is a 100 bed capacity with a warm meal served every night.
For more information, call Niki Lane at (209) 525-8954.

The Turlock "We Care" Shelter, located at 400 "B" St in Turlock, has opened and is operated by United Samaritans. There is a 50 bed capacity and a warm meal is served nightly by area churches.

o the Curbside News readers, Itıs been awhile since youıve gotten a Curbside News and I do apologize for that. You should find the newest issue in your mailbox now. There have been some changes to CSN that you may notice. For one thing, itıs shorter. Weıve decided to pretty much get away from Homeless issues on a national level and concentrate more on local issues. Why? Because our Homeless situations donıt have very much in common with anywhere else. Log onto the national Coalition for the Homeless at www.nch.org and see for yourselves. If youıll check the Curbside News cover sheet, youıll see that The Coalition On Homelessness And Poverty-Stanislaus County is back to being just the Coalition On Homelessness-Stanislaus County. COHSC has given up the office that was located at New Hope Christian Fellowship as Niki has started working for The Salvation Army. Itıs easier for her to do the work out of the office that she has there. The new office is located in the Day Shelter building at 320 9th Street. Curbside News is now being published with the help of the Salvation Army. Lastly, I have quit the Coalition and have scaled down my involvement with Curbside News a great deal. While I will continue to edit CSN and contribute to it occasionally as well as maintain the website, itıs been handed over to another individual to compile the information. I have enjoyed editing and writing for Curbside News and the people that I have come in contact with have for the most part been very supportive, but I had gotten so involved with it that I found I had very little time for anything else. As a result my personal life had begun to suffer. I would like to thank all those that have supported me and gave me the encouragement, help, and confidence that I needed to do the job and made Curbside News what it is. Ken Lane

Just wanted to let everybody know that I've added a link on our website with photos of the Salvation Army Emergency Shelter located at 9th & "D"in Modesto. Please visit the website at www.cohsc.org and click the "Shelter Photos" link. Once again, we'd like to thank Councilmember Janice Keating for taking this load on her shoulders and helping to get this shelter open. The amount of energy that she put into is absolutely amazing. We'll be forever in her debt. Ken

CURBSIDE NEWS ON LINE EDITION, SERVICES LISTINGS

1/14/2004 5:07 AM  Posted by MSN Nicknameschris5363
CURBSIDE NEWS is edited by Ken Lane, and is the official newspaper on line and in print for the Coalition on Homelessness and Poverty in Stanislaus County. You can access CURBSIDE NEWS at COHSC.org, or use the link in our web/link section, and in print at the Sunshine Place, Turlock and Modesto Temp Emergency Shelters and other venues. We recommend their articles, one seen below on the Visions program, a transitional housing program for clients of Mental Health Services. CURBSIDE also features a page of United Samaritan Food Truck schedules, NAMI homeless and missing locator guide, a NAMI page, and a very useful SERVICES LISTING.

From the March 02 Curbside News, written by Kelly Mraz of Visions. VISIONS TRANSITIONAL HOUSING Visions Transitional Housing program offershousing, access to education and employment programs as well services including case management, bus passes, weekly group support meetings, and financial support while a person is awaiting their first checks, or SSI application. We ask that we be able to come to all program participants homes for appointments. If we're the landlord, we also have a key to the unit. Potential clients must be between the ages of 18 and 22, and have an Axis I mental health diagnosis, and be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Prior history of incarceration, or prior or current probation or parole status is not a problem. We work with single young adults, or those who are parenting. Married couples with or without children can be housed together. Visions is a scattered site program, meaning there is not one building, but many apartments in the Modesto area. We are also happy to work with someone to get housing on their own anywhere in Stanislaus County, and will get them a deposit for the residence and utilities, and we can sometimes even help with furnishings or the first month's rent. We are located at 1620 North Carpenter, C-23, Modesto, CA 95351. Our phone number is 523-3710. Ask for any Visions staff person. Our names are Kelly, Mack, Nicole, Hina, Sandra, Sharon, Mark and Jason. To get to us, take the 33 or 36 bus, and get off at Carpenter and Bluegum. We're in the office complex behind the Circle K, next to the back parking lot. Some people prefer to take the 26 bus and walk up the railroad tracks to the end of Bluegum. We take walk-ins, and you can sit in the lobby and fill out your application right here. -Kelly

COHSC also has Paul, who can assist you with Debt counseling, at the Coalition"s offices at 4204 Dale Rd., Modesto. You can find the appropriate phone numbers and other information at www.cohsc.org

January 11 - The Salvation Army is now the lead agency in managing the Temporary Emergency Homeless Shelter at 320 9th Street. The expected occupancy limit is 100 beds. Pets will not be allowed as some were previously informed. Liability issues, and lack of funding prohibits on-site kennels as originally planned. NAMI Stanislaus, and SCMHC are working with animal groups and veterinarians to address a county wide effort to address issues of Homeless and low-income pet owners, animal rescue groups, animal control, in camps, at risk, and transition to shelters where pets can't go, with an alternative to current policies. If you have an input on this issue, please post message, or email me at schris5363@cs.com This would affect all at risk groups.
