This is said to be the haunt of a soldier from the Civil War, a Roundhead. Oliver Cromwell frequented the place and an attempt was made on his life but the fleeing cavelier was shot dead as he tried to make good his escape.

After the Monmouth Rebellion Judge Jeffries sentenced nearly 200 people to death. These unfortunate souls were hanged in the stairwell of the inn so it is not surprising that the place is haunted.
