The ghost here wanders during the early hours of the morning and is said to be that of the wife of a former Mayor of York, Alice Peckett. She is just one of five ghosts reputed to haunt this former coaching inn.

Being given a name change from 'The Fleece' in 1997, this is an old coaching inn that's seen its fair share of murder, which is why it is presumably haunted by so many spirits.

When the place was a brothel one of the working girls was said to be beaten to death and her spirit remains. There is also a Grey Lady who is thought to have committed suicide sometime during the 15th century, and a former landlord who perished in a fire when the place was burned.

This is the haunt of a rather aggressive former landlord named 'Mr Black' as well as the haunt of children that are thought to be the souls of those who lost their lives in a factory fire in 1818. The badly burnt corpses were placed in the inns cellar which acted as a temporary morgue. Eighteen children aged between 9 and 18 died in the fire at Atkinsons Mill.

Reputed to be the most haunted public house in York. Apart from soldiers there are two black cats that haunt the place. An old lady is another resident ghost, though it appears she can only be seen by children.

For no apparent reason doors open and close by themselves. The female that haunts here tends to make an appearance under different stages of age from child to older woman.
