Tmp.  and Temporary internet Files and Cookies

Well know to slow you down and allow web pages

 to track your browsing.

  • Click on "My Computer", or "My Documents".
  • In Address bar on top, click arrow on right side.  Go to (C:)
  • (Or whatever your main drive is.)
  • . . . . .
  • ICQ first as many have it.
  • Click on Program Files. Scroll down and find the "ICQ folder".
  • Click on the "Ate Browser" folder.
  • Click on your ICQ number.
  • Click on "Cache".
  • Click on blank white area between icons, then on "edit" and go to "Select all"                                       which will highlight all of them.
  • Go Back up to the top and click on "File".
  • Then "Delete"  which will delete all the tmp (temporary)  files in that folder.                                             Strange as it may seem, do not delete the cookies icon outside your Cache folder.                                                                     ........

In that folder click up button until you reach "C:"

Those of you who didn't participate before cause

you don't have ICQ are you ready?

Everyone, Click on "Temp" folder.

Then same thing, but will throw in a shortcut..

Hover on an icon, and then using "Ctrl" key on keyboard and the same

time type "A" ( Don't worry, clicking on "Edit" and "File" on top also works)

right click on one of the highlighted icons and Delete from folder. Good Job!!

........

OK Click on "Up" button so to return to C: again

Scroll down to "Windows" folder (NOT windows update)

Click on windows. Note you will not be deleting any folders within windows, just their contents.

Cookies

You will see a scary message not to fool with enclosed files for fear of dire circumstances, but go ahead and click "Show Files"

Its ok, I promise ;-)

Scroll down to "Cookies" and you know the drill, click to enter the folder, then select all, then delete all.  You can not delete index however, the folder is set to protect it.

Then click to go up a level to return to Windows, click show files.

........

go to History, and same drill. Some prefer to leave some history so they can return to sites, do as you wish.

Then Up a level button and go to "Temporary Internet Files" folder,

Select all and delete.

Up a Level and within Windows do same thing for "Temp" folder

You can then go to your recycle bin on your desktop and empty it.

(Tadaaaaaaaaa Wav)

Hope you enjoyed doing it together, we now have a clean pc.

Maintenance Tasks

Scan C, and Defrag

This is comparable to changing the oil and rotating tires on your car.

FIRST its real important to close all other programs, including turning off your screen savers.

Do this by holding 3 keys down together, the Ctrl key the Alt key (next to space bar) and Delete key(between keys and side numbers). Close all but your Explorer and Systray

Then go to Start (end of task Bar, where you click to shut down also) to Programs, to Accessories and then to SystemTools and to ScanDisc.   Set that for Thorough and check the box to automatically fix all errors.

If never done before this will take a few hours. I (Purr) normally do both when I go to bed and they're done when I wake up.

The next day I do Defrag. Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools        to DiscDefragmenter.

under options I check all boxes except "For the this time only."

Xp Handles scanning your Disc differently.

 Running Scan Disk (XP)

  • Click "My Computer."
  • Right click on "Local Disk (C)"
  • Click on "Properties."
  • Click on "Tools."
  • Click "Check Now" under "Error-Checking"
  • Check the box that says "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors"

Worst case scenario- Oh no I have to reformat my pc!! ;-(

(reinstall windows all over again)

See this link FIRST.
