| Background created by M.T. Meier Feastday December 10 The title Our Lady of Loreto refers to the Holy House of Loreto, the house in which Mary was born, and where the Annunciation occurred, and to an ancient statue of Our Lady which is found there. - The story of the Holy House is a tale of unequaled wonder written in the stars. Seven hundred years ago, after two prior angelic relocations, the tiny three-sided structure was carried to it's final resting place in Loreto, Italy.
- Tradition says that a band of angels scooped up the little house from the Holy Land, and transported it first to Tersato, Dalmatia in 1291, Reananti in 1294, and finally to Loreto, where it has been for centuries.
The angelic flight of the Holy House from Nazareth across the Mediterranean via Yugoslavia to the Adriatic sea town is known as "The Translation". It mirrors the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt and fulfills God's Will, that this heavenly sanctuary be preserved. - It was this flight that led to her patronage of people involved in aviation,
- and the long life of the house that has led to the patronage of builders, construction workers, etc.
- It is the first shrine of international renown dedicated to the Blessed Virgin,
- and has been known as a Marian center for centuries.
- Popes have always held the Shrine of Loreto in special esteem,
- and it is under their direct authority and protection.
-
Beneath a narrow roof and within the hallowed walls of this humble stone abode, Jesus, Mary and Joseph once ate, confided and prayed. Throughout the centuries, innumerable nobility, dignitaries, saints and popes have made pilgrimage to the Holy House. Tradition claims that Saint Francis of Assisi foresaw its arrival, and indicated the hilltop where it would come to rest to some of his friars. The King of Austria, ruler of the Holy League that defeated the Turks in the battle of Lepanto in 1517,brought his troops to Loreto before their history-changing victory. Upon her journey to the Holy Shrine, Saint Therese of Lisieux wrote, that if she were to live in Loreto she would surely die of joy. In its original form, the Holy House had only three walls because the eastern side, where the altar now stands, opened onto a Grotto. The three original walls, two of which can be seen on the sides of the chapel in the picture, rise to a height of three meters. The masonry above, made of local bricks, was added later including the vault (in 1536), to make the place more suitable for worship. The stone on which the original walls of the Holy House are built and the mortar used in their construction are not known in the neighborhood of Loreto. But both stone and mortar are, it is alleged, chemically identical with the materials most commonly found in Nazareth. The "Santa Casa" does not rest and has never rested upon foundations sunk into the earth where it now stands. The point was formally investigated in 1751 under Benedict XIV. What was then found is therefore fully in accord with the tradition of a building transferred bodily from some more primitive site. | Litany of Loreto "Lord, have mercy on us.
