Herbal Alternatives - by Lisa

With all the ill side effects I've experienced with the popular medications for treating IH (Diamox, Neptazane, Lasix), I took it upon myself to seek more natural remedies to help with fluid reduction.

As a result I have been very active in the study of medicinal herbs for many years. I have experimented with a vast majority of herbal remedies, often growing my own herbs organically so as to avoid any contact with herbicides and pesticides. In doing so I have found a few herbs that work quite sufficiently in reducing fluid retention.

These herbal diuretics reduce excess body fluid but don't reduce excess spinal fluid. They are not meant to ever take the place of your IH medications, or your doctors better judgment. These are very good natural diuretics, however you should always consult your physician as some herbs may interact with your medications.

The main problem to keep an eye out for is losing too much body fluid, which can lead to complications with potassium deficiency and/or dehydration. As with any diuretic (herbal or otherwise) it is recommended that you increase your daily intake of potassium, increase your fluid intake to stave off dehydration, and remain alert to any symptoms of dehydration and/or potassium deficiency.

Listed on the Herbs to Avoid  page are a few herbs that can exacerbate IH and are not recommended for use by any IH victim, or those who suffer from high blood pressure.

Again, the following herbs help to reduce over-all fluid retention in the body, and the safety of combining them with Diamox, Neptazane, or Lasix is unproven. Therefore it is recommended that you discuss these options with your physician. All the herbs listed below can be found in most drug stores.

Dandelion

Taraxum officinale

Medicinal: Dandelion benefits all functions of the liver. It clears obstructions (such as stones) and detoxifies poisons that gather in the liver, spleen, and gall bladder. It will also promote healthy circulation. The juice from a broken leaf stem can be applied to warts and allowed to dry, used for 3 days or so it will dry up the warts. It is also used to treat Premenstrual Syndrome, as it is a diuretic. It has been shown to  reduce cholesterol and uric acid. Dandelion also helps clear skin eruptions when used both internally and externally. (Check Vitamin A content).

Goldenseal

Hydrastis canadensis

Medicinal: Goldenseal is another natural, powerful antibiotic. It should not be used by pregnant women. The herb goes straight to the bloodstream and eliminates infection in the body. It enables the liver to recover. When taken in combination with other herbs, it will boost the properties for the accompanying herbs.

Uva Ursi

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi

Medicinal: Uva Ursi strengthens and tones the urinary tract. It is especially useful for kidney infections, bladder infections, and inflammatory disease of the urinary tract. It is used as a diabetes remedy for excessive sugar in the blood. It is used for postpartum women to return the womb to the natural size, as well as to protect infection of the womb after childbirth. It should not be used by pregnant women.

Valerian

Valerian officinalis

Medicinal: Valerian is a relaxer, and is very effective for insomnia. It is often used as a tranquilizer, but it leaves no sluggish effects on the user. It is used for nervous tension, pain relieving, strengthening the heart, lowering blood pressure, IBS, Diverticulitis, menstrual cramps, and for muscle spasms. It should not be taken over a long period of time, as it can cause mental depression in some people after long-term steady use. It is non habit forming.

Chamomile

Matricaria chamomilla (German chamomile), Anthemus nobilis (Roman chamomile)

Medicinal: Use the tea for nerves and menstrual cramps. The tea is also useful for babies and small children with colds and stomach troubles. Also used to calm the body for inducing sleep in insomniac conditions. It is also a good wash for sore eyes and open sores. Chamomile should never be used if you have allergies to pollen or ragweed. If used it can induce a severe allergic reaction.

Peppermint

Mentha piperta

Medicinal: Peppermint cleans and strengthens the body. It acts as a sedative on the stomach and strengthens the bowels. It is also mild enough to give to children as needed for chills and cold. Used with bitter herbs to improve their taste.

Passionflower

Passiflora incarnata

Medicinal: Passionflower is used to treat hyperactivity, insomnia, Parkinson's disease, nervous tension, and the infusion is used to treat eye infections and eye strain. Native American tribes used it as a poultice for bruises and injuries, as well as an overall tonic.
