THE WORLD OF SALASACA PEOPLE

The Kichwa Salasaca people live in the center of the Andes in Ecuador. They are around 12 thousand inhabitants and they speak Kichwa. The Salasacas work principally in agriculture and indigenous art, which we begin learning at a very young age. One identifiable cultural characteristics of the Salasacas is their tapestries with hand-woven designs and motifs.

Many of the tapestry designs tell the stories of their lives. The tapestries currently exhibited are all handmade, starting with the transformation of the sheep's wool, followed by the spinning, dying and weaving. The weaving of tapestries was and is a mix between the designs of chumbi (a sash used by women to fasten their dress to their waist) as well as the form of the weaving of the hemp bags which were in common use in the past. Every Saturday and Sunday at 10am. you can visit our market in the central plaza of Salasaca called "Plaza of the Arts". Ask for Rudy Masaquiza if you want to enjoy a visit into the community. He will be very happy to help you. Also, here you will find some wonderful tapestries that you can buy >>>

Another notable Salasaca activity is their music played traditionally on the flute and drum producing a melody reflecting the symbolic world of the Salasacas. Over the centuries the Salasacas have incorporated other sounds that complement traditional melodies, which today have allowed them to travel to foreign countries with their music, art work and the message of the Kichwa world.

In June, Salasaca people celebrate the harvest festival Inti Raymi that is celebrated in all Kichwa communities of the Sierra. However, in the Salasaca festival circuit, one individual of particular importance is the Varayuk or Mayor, who carries a wand representing power and authority within the community. The following is a listing of traditional Salasaca festivals:
