Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

Exclusively for PlayStation 2, Metal Gear Solid 3's equivalent of MGS2's Substance has been announced - Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. This complete version of MGS3 will include a new 3rd person camera with a lower perspective which "provides players an even deeper stealth-action experience through the jungle," and there's an online battle mode. Those with PlayStation 2 consoles fitted with the network adapter will be able to join other gamers online and choose between "Team Battle" and "Snake vs. Enemies" to carry out missions either cooperatively or competitively. The disc also includes versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, previously only released in Japan, as well as the Duel Mode, Demo Theatre and the other extras which were included with the European version of Snake Eater.

This game will "provide a glimpse of what lies in store for MGS in the next generation," according to Kojima Productions' website, whatever that's meant to mean...

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence will be spread over three discs. The first disc - the Subsistence disc - will contain the main Snake Eater game along with the new 3rd Person Camera Mode, Demo Theatre Mode and the option to link Subsistence to Metal Gear AC!D 2. Disc 2: Persistence contains the Online Mode, Duel Mode, Mini-games (Snake vs Monkey), Secret Theatre Mode and the MSX2 versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Disc 3: Existence contains a MGS3 movie of sorts. It is explained on the official MGS3 site: "In response to requests from the fans who failed to complete the original Metal Gear Solid 3 but wanted to watch the cinematic drama, the Existence Disc was created. This three-hour movie features additional footage and remastered sound edited under the supervision of director Hideo Kojima. Now you can watch the internationally acclaimed MGS3 story and experience it without having to complete the game. Relive the adventure as the Cold Warriors rise again."

MGS3: Subsistence will come in several forms: The first - "Headset Bundle - is the three discs bundled with a PS2 headset for the online version of the game. The second version - "First Edition" - contains the three discs. As Konami states that the third Existence disc will only be available with the First Edition version of the game, we can infer that there will be a thrid version of the game containing only the first two discs.
