Hi....Welcome to this msn groups page. I hope you enjoy looking through these photos of Tabubil. Tabubil is an interesting and fascinating place to live or visit. I decided to post these pictures as an insight into the town and it's surrounding areas as there are very few photos on the net from Tabubil. Until the 1960's very little was known about the Star Mountains and the surrounding areas.. The terrain was difficult and harsh and was home to the Mountain Ok people, more commonly known as the Min. When construction commenced on the overall infrastructure of the Ok Tedi mine in 1981 the township of Tabubil was born. Many of the younger generation of the Min abandoned their traditional lifestyle, culture and heritage and began working for the mine. A look at the Min traditional culture and Heritage was encapatured in a book by Gerry Schuurkamp "The Min of the Papua New Guinea Star Mountains." For further information on the history of the "Min" and a few photos from Dr Schuurkamps book, please visit Copies of Dr Gerry Schuurkamp's book can be purchased from the YWCA Artifacts shop Tabubil - K250.00 plus postage. Phone number - 5489447. I would like to add more photos if anyone has any photos to share and it would be great to add some photos of up and coming social events or gatherings. Some of the photos are mine, all of the photos in album 3 are courtesy of a colleague from Tabubil. Thank you for your contribution. Check out the links for other PNG interests and in particular the wonderful work being carried out by volunteer Doctors in the Province. This link below has some photos . Excellent photos taken of the Star Mountains prior to the mine commencing is at this site: http://www.pngaa.net/Photo_Gallery/Photos_Slideshow_JMcG/index.html For all the latest news, check out Ok Tedi's web site...good to see the "Tok Tedi" magazine at the site.
