* Latin Grammies

You can almost write a sad tango about the rotten luck of this year's Latin Grammy Awards: originally scheduled for 11 Sep, it was disrupted first by the WTC disaster, and again by the start of bombing in Afghanistan.  Now it is
officially cancelled, but the results will be announced in a closed-door ceremony in Los Angeles on 30 Sep (10am PST) which can be seen live on
http://www.latingrammy.yahoo.com

Looking at the list of nomination, the first surprise is that there is a category for the "Best Tango Album" -- it's a good opportunity to learn about new album releases from South America.  The second surprise is that 3 out of 5
nominees for the "Best Classical Album" are also tangos.  Unfortunately, winning the Grammy is no guarantee the CD will be available in distribution.  Just try finding last year's Best Tango winner "Postales de Alma" in the store!

* Tango Sheet music

If good tango music CDs are rare, then good tango sheet music are even rarer.  Budding musicians invariably end up with the same few scores, like Albeniz "Tango in D" or Rodriguez "La Cumparsita".  Fortunately, an Argentinean
site has digitised hundreds of original sheet music and made them freely downloadable at
ttp://www.todotango.com
Our local musicians have no excuse not to start a tango band soon!

The site is packed with many tango resources, like music clips, biographies, interviews, vintage tango photos, and
archive articles from tango's history.  I find the one written by Vernon Castle in 1914 especially interesting (he was the first to introduce Tango to New York from Paris, simplified to suit American taste):

"It was rumoured that the Tango was composed of 160 different steps ... for the average [ballroom dancer], a knowledge of six steps is quite enough."  Oh really??

* Buenos Aires in Autumn

For die-hard tango fans, a visit to Buenos Aires to immerse in the "Good Air" is a must.  We plan to form a group to visit Buenos Aires between 17-24 March 2002 and attend the CITA Tango Congress (http://www.cosmotango.com)
-- one intensive week of Tango with international teachers and Milonga parties every night.  Email me if you want
to join this.

Argentina is probably the most European country in South America.  More than 85% of the population are descended from Spanish, Italian, German and other emigrants from the Old World, and they brought with them their culture, lifestyle, arts and architecture.  This easy familiarity, plus a mild climate and low crime rate, help make Buenos Aires the favourite expatriate city in the Southern Hemisphere.  Travelbugs can check out this site in English http://www.expatvillage.com
