CANDLE MAGICK
Choosing your candles for magick and spellworking can be as unique an experience as anything else, what feels right for you is CORRECT for you!
Candles come in all shapes and sizes. The important thing to note is that your candles be properly cleansed and consecrated before using for any spellworking.
I cleanse them in burning sage smoke or roll them in sea salt first.
Then consider this disclaimer before you start anything else...
SAFETY COUNTS! Where are you going to be burning the candles? Make sure burning candles will NOT be left near drapes or bed linens or right against wall surfaces, near aerosol cans or bottles, on furniture and/or wood surfaces without being in some type of container that will handle the wet wax runoff. Do NOT place them somewhere where your pets can knock them over. I frown on the use of candles with herbs in them as I almost caused a fire in my apartment with a candle that had been made with lavender blooms and it ignited and was very hard to put out. This too, is a personal choice of yours. If you are using a candle made with herbs, I would suggest that you do not walk away from it, even for a second! I also do not suggest the use of burning candles for three days or seven days, i.e., if the spell calls for it as this action is really a safety hazard. Burning during the spellwork is sufficient. The Lord and Lady KNOW your intentions and KNOW what you mean to do and the status of your heart and ANY spell can be modified.
To consecrate the candles, rub them with oil (this can be as simple as jojoba oil or as elaborate as an essential oil that is aligned with the magickal properties of the spell you are working) and dab the excess oil on your third eye and breast bone and say, "this candle I do consecrate for use for the Lord and Lady...may its light burn bright."
You MAY use your athame to inscribe runes or sigils into the surface of the candles before burning, this is optional and again is entirely up to you and what works for you.
Then commence with your spellwork.
