Welcome to my page on Bullying at Work. This page , like the page on stress is not trying to re-invent the wheel. there are far better sites created that are bullying specific. And i will put links to those sites frequently.

Workplace bullying is not a new problem or even restricted to teaching but it is a major source  of stress and worry for teachers. Bullying amongst adults is just as damaging as it is amongst teenagers and children. Its a shocking fact that in a profession where we shield children form bullying and empower them to stand up for themselves, we cannot find the strength to stand up for ourselves.

Bullies rely on your silence. Dont give them the satisfaction. I hope this site helps you in some way. And this page is dedicated to directing you to the links that will give you more information. Pettya

A Health and Safety Issue

The Health and Safety at Work Act requires employers to provide a 'safe system of work' . Do you feel afraid to go into work>?   Do you feel uncomfortable in your workplace or worry about what will happen next? If so, your employer is not doing enough to help you. 

Does your school have a safety rep. Contact them and the union rep. Bullying should be dealt with through the school's internal procedures, perhaps informally to begin with. But make sure to get everything in writing and seek help as soon as possible. See Annies Page for details of union websites or to ask Annie's advice

Real life personal experiences

11 May 2000: a 45-year-old Shropshire teacher has accepted £300,000 compensation for a career wrecked by the bullying a new female head teacher. The teacher, who specialised in working with emotionally and behaviourally disturbed children, experienced a stress breakdown following a year of confrontations with the headmistress whose methods he questioned. The behaviour of the headmistress, which Shropshire LEA admits as "management difficulties", resulted in the destruction of a popular and successful employee previously tipped as a headmaster but who is now described as a "recluse". He asked not to be named.

I think that bereavement is a good description of how you feel when you give up your job as a result of bullying or unfair treatment.

Although I am still working I doubt if I shall ever have a permanent job again and I still grieve for the confident teacher I was.

I think that many people believe it can't happen to them but an illness, change of management or job can transform a person's life beyond recognition.

A former deputy headteacher has won more than £100,000 in damages after claiming he was bullied at work by colleagues.

Anthony Ratcliffe, 48, said his experiences caused two mental breakdowns and forced him to give up teaching.
